Do you know the history behind the Harris Company? 🏛️

In 1905, two brothers named Philip and Herman Harris opened a store on Third Street with just five employees. Their other brother, Arthur, joined the company and by 1907, the business rapidly grew into a corporation worth $1 million. 🤝

The store became a local attraction featuring San Bernardino’s first elevator in 1908, which many people recalled as the first time they had seen an elevator, with some remembering how the adults would humor the kids by taking them up and down. By 1907, the Harris family had built a department store with a basement, first floor, mezzanine, second floor, third floor, rooftop garden and a second-floor restaurant. 🛍️ ☕

In 1981, the Harris Company was acquired by El Corte Ingles, S.A., and in 1998 it was acquired again by Gottschalks and renamed Harris-Gottschalks. Although the original downtown San Bernardino store was closed in 1999, the Harris family is remembered for their civic-mindedness and many contributions to improving the quality of life in San Bernardino and surrounding communities. ✨

The holidays may be over, but there’s still time to recycle your Christmas tree. 🎄♻️

Through January 9, 2026 residents with curbside collection can recycle their natural Christmas trees for free by placing them at the curb or next to the dumpster on their regular collection day.

Here’s how to prepare:
✅ Remove the stand and all decorations
✅ Cut trees over 4 feet in half
✅ Natural trees only
🚫Flocked trees cannot be recycled and must be placed in the trash, cut in half, if over 4 feet tall, or residents may schedule a bulky item pick-up.

📲For more information or to schedule a bulky item pick-up, please call Waste Management at 1-800-423-9986.
