Happy 133rd Birthday, Team AFRO -- Five generations strong—and still going!

Today we celebrate 133 years of telling our community’s stories, holding power to account, and lifting up the voices that too often go unheard. It all started with the vision of John Henry Murphy Sr., made possible by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Howard Murphy, whose investment turned a dream into a reality. From that seed, we’ve grown into a media company with award-winning journalism, a strong digital presence, signature events, and even our news and logo appearing on digital billboards inside businesses throughout Baltimore City and County.

We are grateful to God for sustaining us through every season. We are AFRO strong—talented, creative, and committed to telling the truth. And we refuse to be slowed down or discouraged by today’s exhausting political climate. We know who we are, why we’re here, and the vital role we play for our community.

🎉 Happy 133rd Birthday, AFRO! 🎉
Since August 13, 1892, when John H. Murphy Sr., a formerly enslaved man, borrowed $200 from his wife, Martha Elizabeth Howard Murphy, to buy a printing press, the AFRO-American Newspapers has been the voice of the Black community — telling our stories, confronting injustice, and celebrating Black excellence.

From documenting racial lynchings and challenging Jim Crow, to defending voting rights and uplifting Black businesses, the AFRO has stood “through the storm” — for five generations.

Today, we are a digital-first media company with the same mission:
🖤 Amplify Black voices
🖤 Hold power accountable
🖤 Preserve and share our history

💡 Help us keep this legacy strong for the next 133 years.
