KSP Conducting Death Investigation in Harlan County

On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at approximately 2:18 PM, Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan, received a call regarding two individuals found deceased at a residence in the Closplint community of Harlan County.

Troopers and detectives from Post 10 responded to the scene and began an investigation. The initial investigation indicates a domestic situation occurred between a husband and wife. The female fled the residence and was fatally struck by gunfire. A short time later, the male died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on the front porch.

Both individuals will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

Detective Jonathan Ledford is continuing the investigation. The Harlan County Sheriff’s Department and the Harlan County Coroner's Office assisted at the scene.

We are beyond proud to recognize sophomore guard, Ella Karst, as she was inducted into the Harlan County Schools Frank Brittain Academic & Athletic Hall of Fame! This prestigious honor recognizes her incredible impact both on and off the court.

Ella has already done so much for our program, including returning leading scorer, clutch play making, and proving herself a leader in every way. We’re thrilled to see her continue to shine and step into an even bigger role with UVA Wise this coming season. She’s not only a phenomenal player, but an incredible person and teammate, and an absolute asset to our program. We can’t wait to see what her sophomore year brings! ✨🏀
Congratulations, Ella!
