Apologies for sketchy details…I am on the road…more later.

WHY WON'T NORTH AUGUSTA POLICE RELEASE NAME OF SUSPECT WHO KILLED TWO INNOCENT PEOPLE ON SUNDAY AT SPRINT GAS STATION?

We’ve been asking this question for several days now.

We’ve filed open-records requests with both North Augusta and SLED, the agency investigating the officer-involved shooting. Unfortunately, neither agency has provided an explanation for withholding the suspect’s name. They also haven’t issued a public statement about why the identity of the alleged killer remains a secret, despite reports indicating the suspect was shot by a North Augusta Department of Public Safety (NADPS) officer during the incident.

No suspect name. No officer name. No explanation of what happened, or a possible motive. No press conference by the chief. Nothing.

We also reached out to North Augusta Police Chief Junior Johnson, but our message was not returned as of Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, residents on our page are demanding answers. Johnny asked, "Who was the North Augusta shooter and why haven’t they released that part of the information to the public?" (His comment has received 107 likes as of this posting.)

"Yes!! The million dollar question!!" added Shallon Fricks.

Anthony Powell added, "Makes ya wonder who he's related to."

All we can do is ask.

Since North Augusta isn’t offering an official explanation, we’ve started asking around. Other local leaders are just as puzzled. They believe there’s no law that should prevent NADPS from releasing the suspect’s name, nor the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

There also doesn’t appear to be any law that would allow SLED to prevent NADPS from releasing the suspect's identity.

If you recall, Richmond County Sheriff Eugene Brantley wasted no time releasing the suspect’s name after the officer-involved shooting on Washington Road on October 2. He also made himself available to answer media questions.

As for NADPS spokesperson Lt. Clay Swann, he says he’s waiting on approval from SLED’s legal team before releasing any details. However, we haven’t seen any legal justification preventing the release of a murder suspect’s name while the officer-involved shooting is still under investigation.

SLED has, in the past, taken months to release names related to officer-involved shootings. Will the victims’ families have to wait just as long to learn the name of the killer and the potential motive behind this tragic incident?

It's a heartbreaking situation.

THE MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD IN AUGUSTA WAS A WANTED S*X OFFENDER...

The man whose body was found dead Tuesday in Augusta was a registered s*x offender who was reported missing and had not been seen for two weeks.

Richmond County authorities have identified the man as 66-year-old Byron Smith of Augusta. His body was found Tuesday in a wooded area off the 2400 block of Bahama Drive in Augusta. At this time, no foul play is suspected, the coroner said.

At the time of the discovery, Smith was wanted for a probation violation warrant in Columbia County, and he was listed as an “absconder” on the state’s S*x Offender Registry.
