THE WATERING TROUGH along the National Road in Hopwood, Pennsylvania (22 miles from Confluence) was constructed to water thirsty horses in their travels on the Old Pike in its heyday. From the horse to the railroad to the auto—the trough helped the latter as well. It cooled radiators and brakes. Pictured is a postcard from the 1920s—when roads in America were being constructed and numbered.
