“Live At The Kino” by Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross is a sterling recording, expertly capturing the rough ’n’ ready sound of the group performing in the favourite European venue of any combo lucky enough to play there.

We’ve decided present this release as a CD + booklet package which lets Phil get into fair detail about his comings and goings since forming post-punk band Khmer Rouge and playing their first gig at Thurston Moore’s prescient 1981 Noise Fest, eventual becoming regulars at CBGB, Mudd Club, Peppermint Lounge and the Ritz. After opening shows with The Clash, Alan Vega, Nico and Carl Perkins (among others), they were managed by Nat Finkelstein, renowned photography god at Andy Warhol’s Factory. Phil return to his native UK and has never stoped playing, but he’s now based in Prague with his new combo, Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross.

If you missed the latest issue of here you go!

“As he makes his grand musical comeback after decades of silence, with a new album of unreleased recordings entitled Sixes and Sevens, we find John arm in arm with his new wife, Laurie, formerly Mrs. Vanian for those in the know. And while they blend with almost effortless ease into the Victorian wood paneling and mirrors of the venerable Sir Richard Steele pub, it would be difficult to claim they go unnoticed. Together, they crystallize the quintessence of a dark and refined aesthetic, subtly tinged with gothic romanticism - that of a certain aristocracy of English rock”, by

Is there anything left to uncover from the great era of post-punk's innovation and experimentation? “Not too likely” would've been our answer until just weeks ago, when we stumbled into Entracte.

We're tremendously excited about 'Imbalance', their fist release with us. Head over to Bandcamp and have a listen.

If you're in Manchester don't miss this tomorrow! The panel is called “PUNK: The Last Word - (or is it?)!". Helen brings her perspective as a performer, writer and a teller of generally lived stories of a “She-Punk”.

The debate’ll be chaired by Louder Than War's own John Robb, alongside Chris Sullivan, Stephen Colgrave, Russ Bestley and Mike Dines (Punk Scholars Network), THE Marco Pirroni and Ryan Walker.

An amazing discovery of missing post-punk genius!

Via the same fellow, Umbridge, who introduced us to ex-Siouxsie & the Banshees guitarist John McKay, whose debut album of “lost” and unreleased studio tracks we unveiled earlier this year (and which went on to make the UK Top 40 Album charts comes Umbridge’s own former band, ENTRACTE and their decades-belated debut, 'Imbalance'.

The band developed from within Manchester’s fertile post-punk scene in the late ‘80s and recorded loads of fantastic material, but despite the excellence, beauty charm and mystery of what they did, they never released a single note of it until now.

Entracte experimented with a wide range of rhythms and sounds, likely due in part to the then-current explosion of access to African and Middle Eastern musical forms. Their sound is immediate and stunning, with a unique flair we can’t describe succinctly enough to fit on this post! 'Imbalance' embodies the influence of the musical forms, art and personalities in Manchester, a vital breeding ground for genius at that point in time.

Much of the band’s history is a tangled mystery of comings and goings, but essentially, they were based around Umbridge on guitar, singer Sharon Quinn and drummer Graham “Dids” Dowdall. Dids (who passed away last year) played with many greats - Nico, Cabaret Voltaire, Pere Ubu and John McKay among them - and importantly Ludus, the avant-garde brainchild of artist Linder Sterling, whose visual art many punk fans will recognise from the infamous sleeve on the Buzzcocks' Or**sm Addict 7” single, among other works. Linder and Vincent became friends far back in post-punk’s early days (alongside a young Steven Morrissey!), and Tiny Global Productions is delighted and honoured to announce that Linder has contributed the image that fronts this package, a truly sterling 1930’s-inspired piece called “Irina”.

This package contains a full-length CD and a many-paged booklet with loads of history and detail that you won’t want to miss. We’re already working on a second volume, and we should mention that this is a very limited-edition package which (a day after announcing it) has surprised us with hefty sales and even fan mail!

NEW RELEASE!

Anyone in the US or UK who's heard of Ebensee, Austria, likely knows it for KINO EBENSEE, an old movie theatre in a tiny mountain town run by Konrad Wallinger, which invariably becomes the favourite European venue of any act lucky enough to play there. It’s a remarkable venue that - for whatever magical reason - always brings out the best in bands. Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross first played at the Kino in 1999 and have played there each year since.

Sound engineer Roland Promberger produced a sterling recording of the band’s gig at the Kino earlier this year and we couldn’t pass on it. It’s that good! Their sound is rooted in something of rock tradition but they manage to transcend the genre. They’re a rare example of rare late-rock experimentation and vision.

We’re offering this release as a CD plus a massive essay (Shoenfelt is a great writer) for the booklet accompanying the package. He has a long, strange history on the margins, journeying from his birthplace in Bradford UK to rough 'n' tumble early-‘80s NYC where he dallied with The Clash, Alan Vega, Nico and Carl Perkins. He then returned to the UK to get cleaned up and mingled with Nick Cave, Barry Adamson and Mark E. Smith. We can’t wait to read about it.

The cover painting is by Claus Castenskiold, known for his work with the Fall, The Gun Club and Kid Congo. He offered use of this brilliant piece to accompany this release.

Out today!

Stuart Moxham’s new album ‘Winter Sun’ is a gift to the senses. A cohesive collection of avant-garde ideas with deceptively forthright personal lyrics, solid hooks, ambience and vaguely off-centre instrumentation. It’s his first truly solo release in three decades, and for fan’s of Young Marble Giant who longed for more of Stuart’s minimalism and emotional range, it’s made the wait worthwhile.

The album came together thanks to Dave Trumfio (leader of Pulsars, bassist for Mekons), who entered the project as producer, curator and arranger. It’s an ideal collaboration that allowed the best of Stuart to shine through, in two versions: the album version is a somewhat stripped-down reworking of the tracks, and Dave’s version which we’ve made available as a special free bonus CD or as a bonus download.
