MIRJAM INGOLFSSON 1974-2023 On July 21. 2023 passed away after a 25- year bout with cancer. Yet she remained active with her passion of making music with the Cello. It was my privilege to be her friend and colleague having performed/recorded with her. She was a constant friend since her very young years as a student at the Curtis Institute. She was ever supportive of my composing of new music, for which I am eternally grateful. When her mom Ursula requested that I compose a piano solo for the left hand and she too requested that I compose a solo for her as well, I gladly reciprocated, in kind! Her Cancer was in my mind always under control, as she never complained about it. I did not realize the extent of her suffering while she graciously supported my composing of what became a requested Concerto for Cello and orchestra. As I confided in her of my despair over the loss of my wife Lydia, she became ever closer in support and friendship, most recently in her guidance throughout the completion of one other composition, a REVERIE for cello and piano weeks before her tragic passing. Her unselfish support of music is but a testament to her dedication to the cello. We are on this Earth for such a short time. The example that Mirjam exemplified should be a lesson for all to emulate. She was a true Artist in every sense of the word, and we should all miss her presence!

CRS Vice President and Co-Founder, Lydia Walton Ignacio, attended the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music in Manila, earning a bachelor’s degree in music. Later she became the first prize competition winner of the National Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, open to the most gifted pianists throughout the Philippines. She represented the Conservatory in numerous concerts, including a performance of said Concerto with the Manila Symphony, the nations leading orchestra. This lead to a scholarship from the Music Foundation of the Philippines to study abroad, where she simultaneously received a scholarship from the Peabody Conservatory of Music studying piano with Mieczyslaw Munz and Leon Fleisher. Their, she earned the Masters Degree and Artist Diploma. She was also awarded the Institutes Lillian Gutman Memorial Prize for excellence in piano performance. For years, she taught at the Combs College of Music and performed as company pianist for Pennsylvania Ballet, where she performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto, with the ballet orchestra in addition to many other events. A much sought after recording artist, she participated in more than 100 composers recordings, many of them world premieres, including prestigious artists from the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and celebrated artists from the Juilliard, Curtis Institute and University faculty throughout the US. She also taught piano and accompanied students in repertoire classes at the Peabody Conservatory. The Philadelphia Inquirer gave due credit for her vast number of CD recordings and the New York Times commented on her performance of the Mendelssohn Sonata, stating…” accompanist, Lydia Walton Ignacio, shape these large scale pieces pliantly yet firmly.” Needless to say, her colleagues, friends and students will miss Lydia Walton Ignacio, who gave so much in music, but expected little in return.

We are pleased to welcome new composers/ performers and congratulate current composers among our CRS members who have participated among the artists in this years CRS NATIONAL COMPETITION FOR COMPOSERS. They will join me in this new CD recording. These composers are, Sheila Forrester, Martin Stepper, Randal Snyder, Doug Davis together with Peter Mennin, who was selected by the CRS committee as the honored choice. The composer selected could not record during this new CD due to a prior commitment. Thus, he graciously declined the recording opportunity with CRS. The alternate pianists selected are Dr. Mitch McKay and Dr. Jeffrey Jacob.
This recording will feature the Mennin Five Piano Pieces (1949) from a recording mastered at the Juilliard School, in 1985, at the invitation of Dr. Mennin. It was performed by pianist Lydia Walton Ignacio as this recording pays tribute to her many recordings. This recording of the Five Piano Pieces can also be heard on You Tube.
My support and thanks goes to the committee who participated in this competition and to the CRS Board members who continue to offer encouraging guidance in future endeavors. We offer our constituents our cooperation in this most challenging endeavor by the CRS. I am certain that Lydia would have loved to know that CRS can carry on in a tribute to those so deserving of the attention needed in an effort to bring music to all who would benefit by this exposure. I welcome anyone who can join in this effort on behalf of CRS and for the benefit of music lovers both hear and throughout the globe.
