Snow Day - Varied Thrush, graphite on Strathmore bristol board, 9 x 9” By Kevin Johnson
Canadian Artist Johnson was a Finalist in our Art Challenge #148 Wildlife with this piece. He shared his inspo for the making of this sweet drawing and said, “It came while looking out our kitchen window one snowy day. Unexpected snowfalls where I live are still special treats and catch many creatures off guard. As the snow lightly fell and accumulated on the branches of a mountain ash tree, a varied thrush hopped from branch to branch trying to capture the last of the season’s berries. The light was magical, and I knew a drawing needed to be created.”

Continuing last issue’s basic start of Ben’s portrait, here the piece is taken to completion. We observe Ben as he considers his next move. His eyes fixed on a thought with a determined mouth. Let me explain my approach here in a different way: I did these enthralled strokes like when I played jazz piano years ago.
I started with the melody and then slowly did my own interpretation based on that melody. In music and art, our mind gets us to interpret the subject in full gear. There was no final fussing done with Ben’s portrayal. I stopped while I was ahead. I’m exhilarated even describing this for you...
