We have this really great demonstration by colored pencil artist Andrea García Bruno from Spain. She shares how she experimented with graphite, charcoal, watercolor and pastels, and how the problem was not the medium, but the subject. She tried drawing human portraits, landscapes, architecture and fantasy. But one day she decided to focus on something else, something that she had a true love for since she was a kid: animals.

Shown: A sea otter mum with her pup, colored pencil, 12 x 12" The reference picture used for this piece was shot by Dr. Randall W. Davis, a prestigious, professor of marine biology at Texas A&M University who dedicated his life to study the behavior of marine mammals, and who proudly owns a fine art print of this drawing. She used a special color palette, which looks a little colder than in real life to recreate the glacial ambient described by the photographer. The water was mostly made with wax-based pencils blended with turpentine to create a blurry, unfocused effect, which helped bring attention to the two adorable otters’ faces.

We are ON LOCATION this issue inside the studio of artist Jennifer Johnson - What’s something special she keeps close in her studio? Aside from Johnny “Cash” her Frenchie, she says, “My “Artist Choice” award. Among all the ribbons and awards I’ve received over the years, the one that means the most to me is the Artist Choice award from the Greeley Stampede. What makes it so special is that it’s chosen by fellow artists—people who truly understand the long hours, the creative struggles and the selfdoubt that comes with this path. To have my peers, whose work I admire, in turn recognize and appreciate what I do is an incredible honor. It’s more than just an award, it’s a reminder that my work resonates with those who know this journey best.”

Working in soft pastels, Yael Maimon creates impressionistic depictions of her feline subjects. There is a wonderful quote by Ernest Hemingway that goes, ‘One cat just leads to another,’ and that is certainly the case here. Not just in my personal life but also in my art—one cat painting just leads to another painting. We hope you enjoy the demo in the Feb/Mar issue.

“From the safe space of her bedroom, a girl is painting a scene from Alice in Wonderland. It’s a place where she can play with the borders of reality and develop, just like Alice, from shy and insecure to confident and heroic. The painting explores how fairytales help children understand the world around them through the fight between good and evil,” shares artist Eddy Greenwood. He continues, “ I believe fairytales let children deal with these issues in their own mind before facing them in the real world.”
Eddy Greenwood, Escape from Reality, oil, 47.2 x 35.4"
