Long Beach 908 Magazine Local business. Local teams. Local people. We know East Long Beach. Learn more about the people and places that matter to you.

The idea for Long Beach 908 Magazine was sparked in a local garage one cool overcast May morning in 2011. The idea was to start a community magazine for East Long Beach about local businesses and people. Before we knew it, local advertisers jumped on the opportunity to get the word out about their businesses to the local people that mattered to them and since then it has only grown. 908 Magazine

is now the ultimate source (at least we think so) for all things East Long Beach. We think Life is Great in the 908' and we'd love to show you why!

💡 Introducing the Long Beach Early Learning Hub, located online at thehublb.org. Created by the Mayor’s Fund for Long Beach, “The Hub” is an all-inclusive resource to help families across the city find early childcare (infant through kindergarten) that’s right for them.

🏫 Through the hub, families can search over 120 local childcare sites of all types including in-home providers, childcare centers, non-profit organizations, school district programs, faith-based preschools and private preschools. The site is free both for families to use and for childcare providers to publicize their services!

💵 Also, included on the site is a free and easy eligibility check that parents can use to see if they qualify for scholarships. All parents should check to see whether they qualify, because there is money available that many young families may not realize they are eligible to receive!

🗣️ “We did a study and realized how many families were struggling to find the right childcare. Meanwhile childcare programs exist in our city that have open spots. Our purpose is to connect the families to the perfect childcare facility for them. And in many cases, we can help families find scholarship money as well,” said Whitney Leather, the Chief Impact Officer for Long Beach Early Learning Hub.

🎉 If you’ve seen Disney’s Coco, you’ve had a glimpse of the vibrant and colorful celebration of life after death: Día de los Mu***os. Rooted in traditions that date back more than 3,000 years, it began with the Mesoamerican peoples of Mexico, who used the holiday to honor deceased loved ones and believed that each year the spirits of loved ones could return to visit the living during this time. In the past two decades, the celebration has crossed borders, gaining popularity in the U.S., where it is primarily observed on November 1 and 2.

💀 One common element each celebration has is the centerpiece of the holiday–the ofrenda–an altar to honor our loved ones. Each ofrenda is unique but some traditional items are: photographs of the departed, calaveras, candles, cempasuchil, and pan de mu**to. Arturo Enciso of explains, “Pan de mu**to is a symbolic bread. It’s topped with little different shapes on top of it that some people say represents teardrops and other people say it represents bones.”

🌴 A newer addition to Long Beach’s festivities is the Viva La Vida run in Belmont Shore. Host Angela Holder, who once lived in Mexico, said her idea grew from experiencing the holiday there, “It becomes this magical place at that time. Everybody’s in the parks and they’re near the church and there’s flowers everywhere.”

☀️ From neighborhood ofrendas to fresh loaves of pan de mu**to, Long Beach offers many ways to honor the tradition. This season, visit local events and bakeries to celebrate Día de los Mu***os in your own way.
