The idea for Long Beach 908 Magazine was sparked in a local garage one cool overcast May morning in 2011. The idea was to start a community magazine for East Long Beach about local businesses and people. Before we knew it, local advertisers jumped on the opportunity to get the word out about their businesses to the local people that mattered to them and since then it has only grown. 908 Magazine

is now the ultimate source (at least we think so) for all things East Long Beach. We think Life is Great in the 908' and we'd love to show you why!

🐀 “We understand the pain associated with termites or pests. That’s why we’re really dang honest when we come to your house,” says Jason Fiala, owner of Premium Termite and Pest Control.

🌴 Fiala, a Millikan grad and proud former member of “countless Long Beach garage bands,” has been in the termite and pest control business for almost 30 years. Or, as he puts it, “Ever since [he] realized playing drums wasn’t going to pay the bills.”

☀️ In the early 2000s, he and a partner operated a large-scale pest control business, with over 300 employees, servicing all Southern California. However, when the great recession hit in 2008, a company of such size was impossible to maintain. So, since 2011, Jason has refocused his efforts on a smaller-size, regional company based out of his Long Beach hometown. One that depends less on large quantity sales and more on honest service and word-of-mouth referrals. With 12 employees and a narrowed focus, Premium Termite and Pest Control has become a household staple in Long Beach for all the right reasons.

⛺️ Summer is one of the best times to think about termite treatment because not only do termites love the sun, but many people like to tent their houses during a 2–3-day period when they already plan to be out of town for the least amount of hassle!

🦜 It’s green, it’s loud, and it probably woke you up at sunrise with 40 of its closest friends. Here’s what people have to say about our winged neighbors:

🍌 🍓 🥭 Juice It Up! offers a variety of handcrafted smoothies, raw juices and açaí and superfruit bowls—perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack. Their extensive menu has four main sections:

• Raw plant and fruit-based juices
• Classic smoothies such as “Mango Mania” and “Strawberry Wave”
• Fruit-based bowls like açaí and dragon fruit with fun toppings such as granola, coconut, honey and more
• Specialty drinks with lots of protein for athletes and fun flavors like the PB Cold Brew Mocha Smoothie

🌴 Being part of the Long Beach community is Wes’ favorite aspect in owning Juice It Up!, which celebrated one year in business this May. “My wife and I met in Long Beach, and we moved to this neighborhood so our daughter and son could go to Millikan. The fact that we get to employ Millikan and CSULB students is something I’m really proud of.”

☀️ Wes says the neighborhood supported his business immediately and he can’t wait to get to know even more customers this summer!

🎆 It’s back- July 3rd! If you don’t already have a tradition for viewing the Big Bang on the Bay, consider attending the Official Block Party along the water, nearest the restaurant. The $85 ticket not only goes toward local charities and includes dinner from , but you will have the best seat in the house for the patriotic flyovers and other aerial shows that happen throughout the evening. The block party starts at 5pm (and remember, it’s July 3rd) with the firework show starting right around sunset.

🧂 A great new wellness resource for the community aptly named “Urban Salt,” this new acupuncture clinic is here to provide a little stress relief and pain relief into our everyday busy lives. Set up as a non-profit clinic, the acupuncture is both extremely accessible price-wise AND very educational for first-time patients.

🪡 Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese wellness method that involves placing tiny needles (that don’t hurt) into various points in the body to improve the flow of energy in the body. It can help a myriad of conditions, most commonly: head/neck/back pain, stress, digestion, migraines, dental pain, and other chronic pain.

📍 Located near the traffic circle, this new clinic working out of a small medical building is set up as a 501C3 non-profit, which means their goal really is to provide acupuncture to everyone!
