She was 11 years old, alone in the Atlantic, with no food, no water, and no idea if anyone would ever find her. 😳😟😳😟😰
In November 1961, Terry Jo Duperrault left Florida with her parents, brother, and younger sister for what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime — a family sailing vacation through the Bahamas 🇧🇸 aboard a 60-foot yacht called the Bluebelle. Wikipedia
A few days later, that dream became a nightmare. 😳
During the night of November 12, the yacht’s captain, Julian Harvey, killed members of the Duperrault family and his own wife before deliberately sinking the Bluebelle. Terry Jo, only 11, somehow escaped. Wikipedia
She ended up alone on a small white cork float in the middle of the ocean.
No phone.
No GPS.
No emergency beacon.
No food or fresh water.
No shelter from the sun.
Just an 11-year-old child surrounded by miles of open sea.
For approximately 82 hours, Terry Jo drifted under the scorching sun, becoming severely dehydrated and badly sunburned. Then, on November 16, a crew member aboard the Greek freighter Captain Theo noticed something tiny and white among the waves.
It was Terry Jo.
She was pulled aboard barely conscious and later airlifted to a hospital in Miami. Wikipedia
Meanwhile, Harvey had already been rescued separately. He told authorities that the Bluebelle had been destroyed by a sudden storm and that he had been unable to save the others.
But Terry Jo was alive.
And eventually, she was able to tell investigators what she had seen aboard the yacht. Her account contradicted Harvey’s story. After learning that Terry Jo had survived, Harvey checked into a Miami motel and died by su***de before the investigation could fully play out. Wikipedia
Terry Jo Duperrault became the sole surviving member of her family from the Bluebelle tragedy.
More than six decades later, I think this story hits differently.
Today, we are used to having a phone in our hands, GPS telling us exactly where we are, weather alerts, satellite communication, emergency services and technology designed to help locate us.
Terry Jo had none of that.
She was 11 years old, floating alone on the Atlantic on something barely larger than herself — and she held on.
Sometimes resilience doesn’t look dramatic while you’re living through it.
Sometimes it simply looks like surviving the next hour.💯
Then the next.💯
And then the next.💯🥰
Until, finally, someone sees you.
Terry Jo survived. And more than 60 years later, her story is still a remarkable reminder of just how powerful the human instinct to survive can be.
Do you think you could have
Survived ? Not sure if I could but know I would sure try 💯🇧🇸
