After completing the long drive from the Upper Peninsula back to the Twin Cities, trumpet player and composer Adam Meckler was happy to pop in the booth at Jazz88 and discuss his upcoming gigs at Berlin on Friday, TODAY, August 15. Meckler also talked about his upcoming record “Sampled” which drops in November. Meckler also shared what he and the rest of the team from the Michigan Technological University do to support their jazz students in Michigan.

This week's Hot New Local Single is Cody Steinmann's "And Make."

Here's what Sean has to say about the single:
Cody Steinmann is a trusted guitar player and teacher in town who can be found giving lessons, playing gigs and sitting in. Steinmann is also a recording artist who is consistently putting out new material. Earlier this summer, Steinmann released the new EP Barely Anyone Calls Me So I Just Stay At Home and Make My Own Damn Music. Perhaps Cody doesn’t get as many inbound calls as he wants. . .but it seems to me he’s doing fine building community with celebrated players in our scene and beyond. On this latest release he connected with trusted players from town like Proper-T, Solomon Parham and Bryan Murray. Steinmann also built a bridge with the celebrated New York based saxophonist JD Allen and drummer, Nic Cacioppo. Steinmann does leave a lot of the music making to himself by handling guitar and bass duties but the record still sounds very collaborative throughout.

I was drawn to “And Make” which opens with a landscape very reminiscent of the Marc Johnson album The Sound of Summer Running. Once Cacioppo enters on drums, the tune takes on a more strident feel but still features these hauntingly edited moments where the rhythm section goes mostly mute and the soloist floats into a new zone. Throughout the tune Steinmann’s guitar doesn’t so much shine as radiates with an inviting chord cycle being invited by heavily effected lead sounds for the guitar solo.

It is great to see Cody Steinmann continue to bring new collaborators into the fold and though I’m sure his time making music at home is well spent, I hope we’ll see Cody Steinmann out on the bandstand celebrating this release in the coming months!
