Several high school teams throughout Maine began the 2025-26 sports season at the first possible minute — midnight on Monday morning — for what is often referred to as Midnight Madness. Varsity Maine, always down for an adventure, sent our reporters to four of those midnight practices.

Fall practices begin Monday, and some teams rang in the new sports year at the earliest possible moment.

"Gerrymandering, the deliberate manipulation of electoral district boundaries to favor one political party, is nothing less than the quiet sabotage of our republic," writes David Moisan in an op-ed.

"It is the practice of politicians choosing their voters, rather than voters choosing their politicians. And it is happening at a scale that would make the architects of our democracy shudder."

Voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around. We need independent redistricting commissions now.

Camp Bomazeen, a beloved Boy Scout camp on the shore of Belgrade’s Great Pond, is no longer actively for sale.

The Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the owners of the 330-acre camp, say they will listen to anyone interested in the property and have reached out to a local conservation alliance to gauge their interest in the site.

The Pine Tree Council is reviewing what to do with Camp Bomazeen in wake of court ruling affirming a condition placed on the deed of the camp if sold.

Renys, the Maine-based retailer, plans to open its 20th store in October in Augusta.

While the move marks its second expansion in central Maine this year, it’s also part of the retail growth happening in Augusta that is filling up vacancies following the departures of other stores.

The Newcastle-based retail chain is opening its 20th store at the Capital Shopping Center in October, adding to Augusta's retail sector.

The state’s highest court affirmed a lower court’s ruling that a much-loved Boy Scouts camp on Great Pond in Belgrade can only be sold if the proceeds from its sale are used to support camping activities for Boy Scouts in central Maine, not to pay off debt.

However, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court also rejected a counterclaim from the leaders of a group trying to keep Camp Bomazeen a Boy Scout camp.

The court's decision, issued Tuesday, leaves the future of camp on Great Pond in Belgrade in doubt.
