Maybe a little behind the times here, but since upon seeing posts about people’s Spotify Wrapped everyone is responding with “f**k Spotify” and “boycott Spotify,” here’s my 2 cents on the whole thing:

While I don’t agree with Spotify paying artists so little (or any streaming service for that matter) that is unfortunately the world we live in, and has been for almost 2 decades at this point. Even if everyone stopped using Spotify and switched to another platform, then what, you’re making an extra $0.03/stream when everyone switches to Apple Music? Congrats, you just went from $30,000 to $50,000 (if you have 1 Million streams, which I’m willing to bet you don’t). Not saying an extra $20,000 isn’t a good chunk of money, but it’s not enough to live off of.

The fact of the matter is, music, in and of itself, has not been a viable product since the 90s. That’s not going to change unless EVERYONE agrees to start buying physical copies of music again, which isn’t gonna happen because everyone else is broke as f**k too, and $15/month for all the music in the world, compared to buying 1 12-song album per month with that $15 until you have a reasonably sized music collection; that just doesn’t make sense to the average consumer.

Everyone needs to suck it up and realize how the music industry really is right now: the music is no longer the product, the music is the advertising to sell the real product which is tickets and merch.
