A sweeping review in Lancet Public Health is overturning the popular “10,000 steps a day” idea. By examining 57 studies and more than 160,000 adults from the U.S., U.K., Japan, Australia, and beyond, scientists discovered that aiming for 7,000 steps daily offers impressive health gains.

Compared to those only walking 2,000 steps a day, participants who reached 7,000 enjoyed:

• 38% less risk of dementia
• 25% fewer cases of cardiovascular disease
• 28% reduction in falls
• Nearly 50% lower risk of early death

Even smaller targets had impact: a 2023 study showed 2,800 steps a day helped heart health, with peak benefit around 7,200 steps.

Lead author Dr. Melody Ding from the University of Sydney stresses that 7,000 steps is a safe and effective goal for longer, healthier living.
