Join for an evening of CircleSinging with VOICES, led by David Worm. CircleSinging is a participatory form of community singing that emphasizes improvisation and collaboration. Sometimes called vocal jamming or vocal orchestra, CircleSinging dates back to the earliest forms of human singing and is currently practiced all over the world.

About Circlesinging:
CircleSinging involves a group of singers, typically arranged in a circle, who spontaneously create music together. A facilitator usually starts by improvising a musical line and then teaching it to one section of the circle. Other sections of the circle then add their own improvisational parts, until everyone has joined, creating a new, spontaneous song. CircleSinging is a “mistake-free zone”—everyone is welcome.
VOICES is led by David Worm and was formed in March 2020 in response to the pandemic shutdown.

About David Worm:
David Worm is a vocalist and instrumentalist whose musical career spans the globe. It has been marked by decades of collaboration and innovation, including his longtime work with Bobby McFerrin and founding roles in vocal ensembles such as Voicestra, WeBe3, SoVoSo, and Motion. He has performed with renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Chick Corea, and Meredith Monk and composed vocal scores for acclaimed dance companies and film projects.

Statement from Mr. Fúchila
“Casa de Cultura y Arte is just that… a dream turned reality. La Casa gives tangible form to years of not just dreaming, but of dedication to our calling to bring our community together. To make room for us. To hold space for our stories, music, traditions, and existence. During this wild time in history, may La Casa be a refuge for those in fear, for those who feel alone, for those who simply want to laugh again. May La Casa be a literal and figurative stage for movements and moments far too large for the walls that hold our 168-year-old roof up.

Que Dios bendiga este hogar y recuerden, están en su casa.

Gracias to all the dreamers! Gracias to everyone who showed up to our Open House and gracias to anyone who’s supported our journey thus far.

“If I want to make the work better or different or push it into new territory, I have to be comfortable with that awkwardness.” -Mark Engel

Engel’s curiosity about figurative art led him to instructor Leroy Parker, who inspired him and became both mentor and close friend. “His approach to the figure and his philosophy on life and on the figure, it just really was inspirational for me,” said Engel. “That really got me into working with the figure and with painting.”

Artist Statement
I use the human figure as a central motif to explore themes of connection, transformation, and involution. My work revolves around the ever-changing motion of selfhood and explores the dynamic interplay between external forces and internal experiences. Process is an essential component in my work, and I build compositions that combine the figure with landscape, fragmentation, distortion, and gesture to reflect transitional states. Relying heavily on intuition, I feel my way through each composition by adding and subtracting elements to arrive at an image that is broader than my conscious awareness and infuses the work with a deeper level of meaning. I strive to find a balance between retaining form and dissolving into abstraction to capture the fluid nature of becoming and soften the boundaries between self and other.

For the 5th Annual Experimental Exhibition, genARTS Silicon Valley, in partnership with Local Color, invite submissions of paintings, sculptures, photography, digital art, and mixed media. As an “experimental” exhibition, we encourage artists, whether emerging or established, to think beyond convention. They highly encourage artists to create a piece in response to the theme or submit one that hasn’t been exhibited before and was created within the past three years.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly. Submissions may explore relationships, networks of support, safety nets, or moments of solidarity. Your work might examine connection and disconnection, celebrate community, or challenge us to see the ways we are interwoven. This exhibition aims to spark dialogue about the ties that hold us together and the creative potential of coming together as “us” in the “US” during this current turbulent political climate.
