First opened in 1951 as Parkington Shopping Center in Arlington, Virginia, this site was one of the earliest suburban commercial developments in Northern Virginia. Redeveloped in 1986 into Ballston Common Mall, the 580,000-square-foot enclosed shopping center served the DC metro area for decades.
​As traditional enclosed malls faced declining foot traffic in the 2010s, developers avoided abandonment by launching a $330 million redevelopment. The complex was gutted, opened up to the sky, and integrated with residential towers and curated dining halls. Reopening in 2019 as Ballston Quarter, it stands as a prime blueprint for how dead malls can be resurrected into vibrant mixed-use urban centers.
