One hundred and seven years ago, on August 21,1918, Orville Gibson died in Ogdensburg, New York (some reports state August 19th or 20th). Gibson gained his early fame as a maker of archtop mandolins and archtop guitars in the late 1800s. Building on his success, he formed the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1902. He sold it to investors who rather quickly pushed him out of the company. He moved to New York to live out his last days, leaving a legacy of great archtop instruments and a last name that would become synonymous with some of the greatest guitars ever made. Though his birth records have never been authenticated, it is believed by some that Gibson died on his 62nd birthday. RIP, Mr. Gibson.
