Mercy.
That got my attention!
“Did you know, euthanized pets are used to make dog food?”
Ever heard this claim and wondered if there's any truth in it? Here's the lowdown... 🧐
In 1998, 2017 & 2018, a euthanasia drug called pentobarbital was discovered in pet food. The only way this drug gets into pet food is if the bodies of euthanized animals have been turned into food.
Before you panic, two things:
1. In the US, it’s against FDA guidelines for dog food manufacturers to knowingly use euthanized animals in their pet food products. So too, the FDA has a zero tolerance policy for any amount of pentobarbital in pet food (Food Safety Modernization Act). That is, it's illegal for pet foods to contain this drug in any amount, no matter how small.
2. Even when pentobarbital has been found in pet food, this is very likely to be from euthanized livestock, like cattle, accidentally finding their way into the pet food chain. In 1998, 2000 and 2004, pet foods that had tested positive for pentobarbital were tested for the presence of cat & dog DNA. There were no traces of cats or dogs in any of the samples.
So, should you worry about euthanized cats & dogs being turned into dog food?
The short answer is no.
