Performers dawn handmade, era-accurate attire as violins and accordions stir with music from throughout history as the Multiverse of Bassanda’s story continues.

Authored by Christopher Smith, director of the Vernacular Music Center, the Multiverse of Bassanda is a fictional universe that houses the performances of the Tech Folk Orchestra, which bases its shows and stories off prominent historical time periods and their musical culture.

Smith said this narrative approach is meant to help the audience better visualize the show as well as allow band members to explore their own creative interests.

“The idea is just to imagine a circumstance which can be the theme for the group and can be engaging and fun for those who like doing cosplay or enjoy historical fiction,” Smith said. “But it also helps the audience understand why they’re playing particular music with particular costumes.”

The Multiverse of Bassanda has hosted shows based in historical eras including 1912 New Orleans and the Berlin Airlift from 1948-1949. Smith said events are chosen based on the prominence of folkloric music and cultures during those time periods.

During the shows, ensemble members adopt their own original, fictional characters to better portray the historical story they are attempting to tell. Smith said the creation of unique personas helps ensemble members to begin imagining themselves more dramatically while on stage.

“It’s like being Steve Rogers versus being Captain America,” Smith said. “They may come into the ensemble as Steve Rogers, but I encourage them to think of themselves as Captain America as well.”

Texas Tech hosted the annual Purple Heart ceremony Thursday morning at Memorial Circle to honor all soldiers who have been wounded or killed in battle. The event, marked by a three-volley salute, the raising of the Purple Heart Flag and the playing of “Taps,” served as a reminder to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Tech President Lawrence Schovanec opened the ceremony by emphasizing the university’s commitment to honoring those who served and said the Purple Heart flag serves as a symbol of commitment and gratitude.

Tech is the first Purple Heart university in the state, a designation it received in 2014.

In a warehouse where military planes used to prepare for takeoff, National Wind Institute trucks await deployment to the frontline of this year’s hurricane season — and they’re hauling radar dishes and storm instrumentation in place of military supplies.

Based out of an Air Force hangar-turned-research station at the Reese Technology Center, the NWI is a Texas Tech organization which specializes in collecting storm data. Rather than only broadcasting from its newsroom, the institution instead travels to coastal areas to gather information hours before hurricanes hit.

Natalie Trout, a Tech alumna and NWI research scientist, said the institute is optimistic when traveling to gather statistics, but the reality of storm preparation can prove melancholic.

“We’re driving in there, and we’re smiling because we’re hopefully about to get the best data ever,” Trout said. “But at the same time, you’re watching people put boards on their windows and evacuating.”

The NWI most recently deployed to Hurricane Ida in 2021 and Hurricanes Beryl and Helene in 2024. While tracking storms of this scale can be exciting for the institute, Trout said each trip comes with the knowledge that locals are faced with losing everything to these hurricanes.

“It’s always fun, but at the same time, we get to leave and go home at the end of the day,” Trout said. “But you’re seeing a lot of other people where that is their home.”

By deploying directly in the path of these storms, the NWI is able to collect the most accurate data possible, said Brian Hirth, a research scientist and team leader on missions. The details of extreme weather are then processed and sent to meteorological firms to give real-time updates to citizens.

Texas Tech is offering student assistance after the fatal floods washed over Central Texas, causing power loss and unstable housing. Flooding in the area is receding as search and rescue efforts continue through Sunday morning.

Students impacted by the flooding and are enrolled in Full Summer or Summer II courses should notify their professors regarding academic accommodations, according to Saturday’s email from Tech Provost Ron Hendrick.

“If you are facing challenges due to the flooding, we encourage you to reach out directly to your instructors as soon as possible,” Hendrick wrote. “You may also contact the Dean of Students office at 806-742-2984 or via email at [email protected] for further assistance and support.”

At least 51 people have died, including 21 children, from the floods that hit Kerr County Friday, according to the Associated Press.

Water rose 26 feet in 45 minutes on the Guadalupe River, leading to flooding and destruction of the area, according to the Associated Press.

Those wanting to donate can reach out to the following organizations:

The Kerr County Relief fund, a non-profit public charity, directs funds to vetted organizations in the area, according to its website.

Southern Oaks Church, located in Kerrville, is accepting online donations. Donors should select the River Flood Relief Fund when submitting funds, according to the organization’s social media post.

TEXSAR, an Austin-based nonprofit specializing in emergency response, according to its website, is raising funds to support people affected by the flooding via boats, drones and K-9 units.
