Winston tightened his grip on the device inside his coat pocket, his jaw setting firmly. He took a half-step back, away from the doctor's outstretched hand.
"No," Winston said, his voice echoing in the vast, quiet cathedral of the Archives. "I just jumped a train over a thousand-foot drop and faced down a killer in body armor. I'm not handing anything over until you tell me exactly what this place is. Why was it buried? And what do they want with my village?"
Dr. Arkady lowered his hand slowly. He didn't look angry; instead, a flicker of respect crossed his tired face. He let out a long sigh, the sound heavy with the weight of centuries.
"Fair enough," Arkady said, turning toward one of the massive, glowing display screens on the wall. "You've earned the truth."
The doctor tapped a command into the console, and the towering screen flickered to life. Instead of blueprints or data files, it displayed a massive, moving holographic model of the Earth—but it looked entirely wrong. The continents were shifted, and a glowing, intricate web of energy lines completely enveloped the globe.
"This city is called Alternis," Arkady explained, pointing to a bright nexus point on the map right where Moscow was located. "It wasn't built by an ancient civilization, Winston. It was built by us—humanity—from a future that no longer exists."
Winston blinked, trying to process the words. "A future?"
"We discovered a way to overlay a digital reality onto physical space—a simulation overlay so powerful it could rewrite the laws of physics," Arkady said, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the screen. "But a faction within our world, the Vanguard, wanted to use it to control mankind, to erase free will and rewrite history. To stop them, we triggered a temporal fracture, burying our cities deep beneath the permafrost, hiding the Core where they could never find it. We chose your valley because the geographic shields would keep it dormant."
The doctor turned back to face Winston, his expression deadly serious.
"The device in your pocket isn't just a key, Winston. It's the master override. The Vanguard aren't just invading your village; they are setting up a broadcast tower on the surface. If they get this device, they can activate the simulation overlay from here and rewrite the minds of everyone in your village—and eventually, the whole world."
Suddenly, the lights in the Archives flickered violently, turning a deep, warning purple. The smooth, rhythmic hum of the city's power grid stuttered.
Dr. Arkady looked up at the ceiling, his face pale. "They've bypassed the lower gates. They are downloading the city's archive data from the main terminal upstairs."
Winston looked from the blinking screen to the silver bracelet still glowing in his hand, and then to the dark tunnel ahead.
