This is a great example of supporting small businesses that actually want our business and reciprocate. A win-win fostering "buy-local, shop-local,", AND, ultimately gives rise to "buy-LGBTQ, for LGBTQ. Because when the community is provided with a chic, dedicated space to mix and mingle where they feel safe and respected, great things happen!

For a little history, this group was previously loyal far too long to a grungy, cramped venue with subpar service and overpriced bar food that did not meet the diverse needs of our community, with management that happily took our money and ran, but did little to retain our business. Inclusivity and belonging amounted to providing a few tables, many empty promises, and hollow gestures. A story that is all too familiar to many LGBTQ folks, I'm sure. I know we have it better in the DMV than most.

It's also a testament to effective City/ County planning and Partnership. Frederick did not get voted America's most beautiful Main Street by accident! When you have engaged local leaders, it attracts businesses that provide opportunities like this. It's moments like this, in the backdrop of times like these, that make me feel so grateful to be a Marylander! 🦀 Way to set the standard and raise the bar!!

2026 is the year professional roles start to change. I break down what this shift looks like, with a focus on how microbusinesses like yours can prepare, in my 2026 Introductory Article.

Happy Veterans Day to everyone who has worn the uniform and fought for our freedom!

🙏if you’re off today and able, take a few minutes to check your cabinets and pantry for any dry or canned goods you can donate to your local food bank. Most accept canned goods 1-2 years past their best buy date, so don’t let those go to waste!

As you’ve probably seen recently, plenty of Veterans and active duty service members are food insecure, even in normal times. Taking a little time out of your day to do this is one of the best ways you can thank them for their service.

This year, I’m prioritizing mostly ready eat ”meals”: soups, ravioli, and proteins. Each may be someone’s only meal for the day.

PLEASE WEIGH IN WITH YOUR THOUGHTS. AM I LOSING IT? 💡

I know a lot of highly skilled freelance IT Analysts, Administrators, and Developers who are eager to work and grow their personal brands or small firms. Even more when you consider folks with transferable digital marketing skills ready to pivot into these roles.

Many have found it challenging to consistently access contracts with large firms that always seem to need their skills. It’s no secret that those firms prefer using offshore labor because of the money.

🤯 They’ll pay a staffing broker $40/hr to hire an offshore worker who makes $15/hr, pocket the difference, and bypass a qualified U.S. freelancer who would gladly work for that same $40.

That's why I firmly believe the $100K charge on H-1B visas offers a rare glimmer of hope from an administration that’s otherwise harmed many small businesses with tariff policies and SBA disinvestment. It won't stop offshoring, but often the person who comes over on the visa serves as a liaison for a much larger offshore team, and this makes that arrangement harder.

This could be the small boon U.S. tech workers with an entrepreneurial spirit need as the fantastic, yet disruptive AI tech and enormous datacenters being built to support it power the next generation of super producers.

🤔 Are the letters "LGBTQ" political to you, ?

We have no central authority or governing body. We're not just in the US, so we're not just tied to the US political system or its binary discourse. I’ve seen politicians across the political spectrum, US & otherwise, be supportive, apathetic, and hateful.

While I've certainly seen the term cause an eye roll or a nasty comment before, I’ve never witnessed as much visceral hate toward these five letters as I have recently, with the implication that we're driving a political agenda. It used to be directed more toward "the g**s" or specific issues, such as marriage equality.

To me, "LGBTQ" means community. It means safe passage. It means acceptance, resilience, and perseverance. It certainly shouldn't provoke such an adverse reaction from those it does not impact.

What does it mean to you? Let's talk about it in the comments because LGBTQ hate by those outside the community is bad enough for business. LGBTQ fracturing during these tumultuous times is even worse. 🤝
