Waterville Man Accused of Illegally Repossessing Truck, Trying to Send It to Auction
POSTED: June 3, 2026
ONEIDA COUNTY — A Waterville man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies say he illegally repossessed a pickup truck and attempted to have it sent to auction.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on May 28, 2026, to M.D. Auto on Oriskany Street West in Utica for a repossession report.
Investigators say 45-year-old Michael Romanowski, the owner of M.D. Auto, reported that he had repossessed a 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck from HMI Pratt and Whitney in Clayville.
After the report was filed, the truck’s owners contacted the Sheriff’s Office and claimed the repossession was illegal.
Deputies say the owners had previously allowed Romanowski to perform work on the truck in January, but the work was not completed, and they got the vehicle back in February.
Authorities say Romanowski later filed a civil claim in Oneida City Court, then completed DMV paperwork claiming a mechanic’s lien and repossession.
However, investigators say M.D. Auto is not a registered or licensed repair shop, meaning Romanowski could not legally complete those documents.
The Sheriff’s Office says the bank and lien holder never authorized the repossession, and investigators determined Romanowski allegedly took the truck from the HMI Pratt and Whitney lot without permission.
Authorities also say the truck had been scheduled to go to auction on June 3.
On June 1, investigators located and recovered the truck at M.D. Auto.
Romanowski was arrested on June 2 and charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree.
DMV investigators also charged him with two counts of Possession of a Forged Instrument.
Authorities say Romanowski’s flatbed tow truck was also found illegally parked in a handicapped spot at the Sheriff’s Office and had a switched inspection sticker. The tow truck was towed, and traffic tickets were issued.
Romanowski was arraigned at CAP Court and remanded to the Oneida County Correctional Facility without bail.
