Gigabyte Grove Brad and Jen founded Gigabyte Grove in South Central Georgia to pursue a self-sufficient, family-centered lifestyle through DIY projects and rural living.

Come along for the journey as they learn by trial and error.

Hurricane season officially begins today, June 1.

Here in South Georgia, that doesn’t mean panic — it means preparation.

Now is the time to check your supplies, review your family’s emergency plan, make sure flashlights and batteries are ready, and confirm you have more than one way to receive weather alerts.

Throughout the season, Gigabyte Grove will be watching the tropics, local weather conditions, and preparedness information closely. Follow our social media pages for updates and details as the season moves forward.

Be prepared. Be ready. Be safe.

Did you see Jen’s prized sunflower yet? 🌻

We already have one in full bloom, with at least four more not far behind. She was so excited to get her hands on these seeds, and honestly, they’ve been such a fun addition to the garden.

If you want to grow your own, we’ve included the link to the same seed pack below:

🎈 Ever wonder what happens after a weather balloon disappears into the sky?

We put together a beginner-friendly guide explaining radiosondes — or “sondes” — the small weather instruments carried by balloons that help meteorologists understand what’s happening thousands of feet above us.

Even better, we also walk through how regular folks can receive and track them at home using a Raspberry Pi 4, an RTL-SDR, and a simple antenna setup.

It’s part weather science, part radio hobby, part Raspberry Pi project, and part treasure hunt.

Read the full article here:

Every day, all over the world, small electronic weather instruments are carried into the sky by large balloons. These little packages are called radiosondes,...

We’re still recovering here at the Grove.

During Kaleb’s last week of school, he brought home one final “gift” for the school year: an illness that hit our house hard, to say the least.

Jen and Kaleb are mostly on the mend, Jen’s mom Sharon narrowly avoided bronchitis, and Brad… well, Brad managed to turn it into a severe sinus infection that required a 10-day round of antibiotics, and some very heavy steroids, kicked off by two very unpleasant injections to the lower back this morning.

So while a lot of folks were enjoying Memorial Day weekend, we were over here running the Gigabyte Grove Infirmary and trying to get everybody back on their feet.

Here’s hoping your Memorial Day was a little healthier than ours.

Harvested my romaine lettuce from Larry's garden. My whole goal with this garden is to grow my own salads, so this is the start of that.

Jen’s greenhouse is starting to come together here at Gigabyte Grove, and we’re pretty excited about it. 🌱

We had big plans to record some video and maybe even a time lapse this week, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Between racing the severe thunderstorms and trying to get things buttoned up before the next round rolled in, the cameras never quite made it into the mix.

That said, we will never complain about much-needed rain in South Georgia. The garden, the grass, and everything else around here definitely needed it.

Speaking of grass… Brad has some serious mowing to catch up on now. If the weather cooperates, that’s going to be one of this week’s big projects.

We’ll be doing a video tour once the greenhouse is all finished, so expect that coming at some point. 😄

Little by little, Gigabyte Grove keeps growing. 🌾

So we planted our Yucca tree, “Larry,” in the ground earlier this year using compost soil I started last year.

Turns out, Larry is a better gardener than I am. 😂

He’s currently growing pumpkin, corn, and lettuce around him… which is especially funny because I haven’t been able to successfully grow lettuce or corn yet.

Apparently Larry got lonely sitting out in the middle of the front yard and decided to grow his own little chaos garden.

I find this way more amusing than I probably should. 😁
