Plastics revolutionized the horticulture industry, and the material still has its place. But the green industry continues to struggle with finding alternatives to reduce the reliance on plastic.

Companies are making sustainability solutions a priority. Here are a few examples, including East Jordan Plastics, The Blackmore Company, Pöppelmann GmbH & Co. KG, Bluestone Perennials, Van Belle Nursery, The HC Companies, Inc., Inc. and AgroRenew:

✨NEW ISSUE: In honor of Earth Month, the April issue is filled with stories about how to create a sustainable plant nursery, utilizing plastic alternatives to reduce horticultural waste and growing native plants that support reforestation and food forests.🌎

In our cover story, Forrest Keeling Nursery and The Giving Grove are shifting the urban environment one tree at a time. By providing native plants that are surviving tough situations and outplantings, community orchards and food forests are thriving across the country.

Sue Markgraf shares how gratitude is a marketing strategy:

This “Marketing Confidential” column begins with a story. And let me preface it to say that I started my research for it shortly after Thanksgiving. For background, I took an informal poll of about a dozen marketing professionals I respect.

Hang with me while I explain.

If you think back to around the holidays, did you notice anything about the communications you were receiving? On an almost daily basis, my email, text messages, social media feeds, even my snail mailbox were like Dursley’s fireplace tossing out personalized letters and year-end appeals. Typically, they offered heartfelt thanks along with asks for this or that.

Several communications featured holiday messaging wrapped in requests to support charitable causes or non-profit organizations. One was from my journalism school alma mater. Another was from a sponsorship organization, a pet rescue and on and on it went.

All of them got me thinking about our horticulture industry and how we market our products and services. I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, but there seemed to be a slimmer of similarity among all the materials. And for days it fought for clarity in my brain.

I remember the light bulb moment like it was yesterday. ... https://www.nurserymag.com/article/gratitude-marketing-strategy-marketing-confidential-sue-markgraf/

David Roberts, Director of Plant Breeding at Bailey Innovations, shares why plant breeding is an art (Bailey Nurseries):

There are many skills and professions that are considered both art and science. Truly, any professional who has mastered their craft to the point of innovating and challenging the conventions of their field could be considered an artist. As a plant breeder, I’ve always considered this field to embrace the best of both worlds. Plant breeders can benefit from a solid understanding of plant biology, genetics, physiology, anatomy and general horticulture. But once the fundamentals of plant science are understood, the breeder (artist/scientist) can create works that rival the most beautiful paintings. Ornamental horticulture is a medium that allows homeowners, gardeners and landscapers to craft masterpieces out of their natural environments. As plant breeders, we want to inspire people to create their own masterpieces by providing them with a diverse pallet of plants that stimulate the senses.

Can you name this shrub? Tell us in the comments.

Clue: Native to a broad range of northeastern North America to include New England states, north into Canada, south to Georgia and west to Minnesota, this species is bone-hardy in tough winters. Spreading by rhizomatous roots to form lush colonies in full sun or part shade, this plant, although not a legume, is also a “nitrogen-fixer” due to root nodules that house specialized bacteria. It also has no significant insect or disease problems.

In honor of Women's History Month, the GIE Media Horticulture Group is featuring women who've made a mark on the industry in our March publications.

Dana Massey, president and co-owner of Plantworks Nursery Inc. As a leading woman of horticulture, she believes it’s important to never stop learning, work hard and engage with the industry.

She’d always dreamed of having something of her own, but after graduating college during a recession, she wondered if the opportunity to achieve that dream would be possible.

Located in Rougemont, North Carolina, Plantworks Nursery was founded in 1978 by Douglas Chapman. It began as a groundcover nursery, and perennials and annuals were added over the years as demand started to increase.

Massey purchased the nursery in 2017, and now the company grows annuals, daylilies, ferns, herbs, hostas, ornamental grasses, tropicals and vines, with a primary focus on perennials. The nursery has five-and-a-half acres of production space, with 172 greenhouses.

"I call it my Cinderella story — all the pieces lined up with the right people in the right places, all at the right times to pull this thing together. It’s been a great ride and has all fallen into place pretty perfectly over time," Massey says.
