After floodwater from Hurricane Helene wiped out Carolina Native Nursery, founder Bill Jones learned how a tireless crew and outpouring of community support can make all the difference.

Carolina Native Nursery sits in a valley at the foot of Mount Mitchell in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina. Nearby is a small stream that, on most days, runs about 10 feet wide. For 24 years, Bill Jones has built a specialty nursery focused on native azaleas, rhododendrons and perennials, shipping to nurseries, garden retailers, landscape professionals and rewholesalers along the East Coast.

The valley had flooded only once that Bill knew about. And that was in the 1970s when a bridge downstream clogged with debris — a problem the state fixed with a larger culvert and now inspects after every significant weather event. One other hurricane had sent a couple of inches of water through the nursery in Bill’s time, and that was enough to prompt a written standard operating procedure for storm prep. But it was not enough to prepare anyone for Hurricane Helene.

Have you ever felt unsure if you wanted to try a new product or idea? Maybe you thought it would be hard to use or wouldn’t work with your infrastructure. Regardless of the idea or technology, humans go through a multi-stage path to adoption, which has been mapped out and described.

When considering a new technology in the nursery, sensibly follow the stages of adoption to help the process: https://www.nurserymag.com/article/decision-mapping-innovation-in-nursery-automation-leap-forward/

This is the second article in a series from the LEAP (Labor, Efficiency, Automation, Production) Team, which includes researchers from seven universities and the USDA, all working with growers to better understand how automation can help address labor issues.
