Last week Netflix experienced a significant decline in its stock price, despite what SEEMED like positive news (a net 8mm new subscribers in Q4). What, then is the issue? Could it be that those subscribers were primarily in territories such as India that cost a fraction of a subscription in the US? Are these lower market subscribers supplanting those leaving the higher priced areas? Then, there's the issue of the big drop off between Q4 (8mm subs) and the projections for Q1 (only 2mm?) Something's amiss here, which is why Wall Street may be balking.
UPDATED: Netflix stock fell almost 3% Monday, continuing the downward trend it’s been experiencing since the streaming giant reported last week it had ended 2021 with slightly lower-than-expe…

The loss of major entertainment figures such as Betty White, Peter Bogdanovich, and Sidney Poitier would be tragic enough, but to lose them all in such proximity is another reminder of how our legacy is always fragile. Given the high hatted treatment Hollywood gave to Chinese subject matter (i.e. very ignorant screenplays; trying to foster western aesthetics on Asian models; being unwilling to do outreach to the Asian community in general or the locally based Chinese community in particular), while expecting to bring big box office was always a pipe dream. China was well aware of both Hollywood's success with Sony and its failure with Matsush*ta -- execs dealing with China would have been well served had they done similar research and done business accordingly).
China has always taken extraordinary measures to protect its massive market from Hollywood content, but 2021 truly put its World Trade Organization obligations to the test. Only 21 revenue-share Ho…
It is too bad the Golden Globes have gotten such a bad name as they have proven to be one of the most generous in their actual endowments of community colleges and universities. At both City and Valley, they have set up very lucrative foundations that truly DO help impacted communities. In that way, they were the avant garde.

@Brian Uptgraft, former student and long-time industry pro involved with Valley College's various grants, now has his own new series coming up. Here's some info ab out it!
"Two New Podcasts are about to drop, featuring true life stories of U.S. Bounty Hunters! Brian Uptgraft, Bounty Hunter for over 35 years will discuss cases, bail recovery, fugitive recovery, shoot outs, and all manner of True Stories. “Criminal Reckoning” will discuss the capture of famous fugitives by FBI, US Marshalls, Fugitive Recovery Agents and Local Law Enforcement. Wanted Bail Skips will feature Fugitives on the run Right Now, and how audiences can help capture them. Go to our website (still under construction) and help us capture Bail Skippers!
How do we discuss with our students what's going on with China and their on-again, off-again investments in Hollywood? The best way is to say they were NOT a unique event in Hollywood history, mainly part a continuum of Big Money investors who eventually got tired of the lack of return on investment.
Many in Hollywood are worried about China pulling out. They should be worried, but they should not be surprised -- especially if they have been in the indust...

In preparation for classes next semester, here's a video discussing some of the challenges that are appearing in the entertainment industry. The differences between Spiderman No Way Home and West Side Story 2021 defines the real dichotomy the industry is facing.
There is a major cultural shift going on in Hollywood today. After years of bounty arriving via China and streaming, Hollywood appears to have forgotten its ...
It would be nice if Variety knew its own industry's history... this "decoupling" is the same decoupling that has happened with Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UK, the EU, corporations such as Coca-Cola, GE, Matsush*ta, Credit Lyonnaise, Vivandi, etc. Every time Hollywood feels it has a "Mr. Moneybags" that will keep delivering cash with no discipline associated with the spend, this type of regrouping inevitably hits. If Hollywood is going to regain its strength, it needs to stop it with constantly trying to appease investors (or Twitter) over audiences and real numbers. It isn't that difficult, and lying that this is "unprecedented" is part of the problem because it happens all the time.
The tea leaves aren’t difficult to read: China and Hollywood can bid adieu to any attempts at in-depth cultural collaboration for the foreseeable future as relations between Tinseltown and th…

History of Documentary Spring 2020 @ LAVC (CIN 104)
IDEAS was originally a program developed by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Department of Economic and Workforce Development in 2002. It originally provided workshops for entertainment industry incumbent workers (generally from unions) in digital media skills.
In 2010, the Entertainment Industry Training Collaborative joined with IDEAS to continue providing incumbent worker training, but with vastly increased funding. In an arrangement with Contract Services Administration Training Trust Fund (the multi-local that also provides “safety passports”) for its members to ensure set safety. During the three years of this grant, over 2,000 industry workers were funded for advanced technical training beyond the scope of its usual services.
From 2013-2018, it was the home for the 19 community colleges in the Los Angeles Region and the 9 colleges in Orange County to post news, links, announcements, special events, etc. that were happening on their campuses. During that time, it hosted numerous workshops including boot camps, curriculum development, high school events, development of new curriculum, and more.
During those five years, IDEAS created nearly 200 digital video assets that may be used in classrooms, workshops, and at Workforce Development facilities. Broken into specific channels based on the occupation, each video features an interview with questions from an industry “newbie” (usually a former community college student just entering the workforce) to an industry pro who has been in the industry for multiple years. The careers covered are mostly below-the-line (crafts) and front office positions to give students a broad sense of all the jobs available. They may be found on individual playlists at the Sensei Dan W Channel on YouTube
Further, IDEAS oversaw 450 regional events hosted at ten different colleges, over fifteen high schools, and at numerous industry partner locations. Through its affiliation with LA HITECH, a California Careers Pathway grant, IDEAS worked closely with Dr. Laurie Nalepa at LAVC to help coordinate up and down articulation from high school to community colleges; from community college to four-year institutions; and, finally, from the workforce back into the community college for noncredit classes. The events held impacted over 5,700 students; 1,000 faculty members; 1,000 incumbent workers; and 100 industry partners. Utilizing industry partners, over forty courses were revised or developed.
The page is now a place for the 19 community colleges to post their announcements, let people know what is going on around the community, and work on special projects with the various campuses.
Please note that it is no longer in any way associated with the ICT and Digital Media portion of the Deputy Sector Navigator grants at this time.
You know what I'm a-gonna say - "you go girl".
