Spain didn't teach us the recipe. It taught us to enjoy the lunch break. ☀

Basil pesto, fresh tomatoes, goat cheese we made ourselves at a little farm in Spain, and a drizzle of honey.

Figs and olives on the side.

Nothing fancy. Just a ridiculously good sandwich, sandy toes, and a view that’s going to be hard to beat.

At what point did kids’ birthday parties become such a production? 😂

The planning. The Pinterest boards. The money. The pressure to make every year bigger and better than the last.

And listen, I’ve been that mom too.

But one thing I’m learning from our time worldschooling in Spain is that sometimes the simplest experiences end up being the most meaningful.

Not because Spain has birthdays figured out. But because being away from our usual routines has given us a chance to rethink a few things.

And I’m starting to wonder how many of those things we’ll actually want to bring back home to the USA.

Parents, where do you stand? Are we doing too much, or is going all out part of the fun?

We thought Florida had the coolest grocery store machine… then Spain said “hold my naranja” 🍊😂

At Detwiler’s back home, you drop in a whole pineapple and it cores and peels it for you 🍍

But here in Spain, the grocery store has a self-serve fresh-squeezed OJ machine. 🤯

You grab a bottle, push the button, and watch the oranges get juiced right in front of you, all for a few euros.

Florida is literally the orange state… so why don’t we have these?!

One month in Estepona, and here’s what I didn’t expect: this whole town is built to be enjoyed outside, together. 🇪🇸

Dogs in the cafes. Neighbors stopping to talk in the middle of the street. Someone out watering the flowers before 8am.

A few things we’ve picked up this month:
🐕 Dog friendly here doesn’t mean tolerated. It means welcome.
🌸 They call Estepona the Garden of the Costa del Sol… after a month, I get it.
🌧️ I’m told those marble streets turn into an ice rink when it rains. We’ll report back.

One month down, two to go with our family of four (plus the dog) living and worldschooling in southern Spain.

I keep waiting for the newness to wear off. Still waiting.

Living in southern Spain as an American family has me questioning a few things about life back home…

In America, we’ve gotten really good at building homes we never have to leave. Home gyms. Home theaters. Fenced backyards. Garages we pull into and close behind us.

Here in Spain, the plaza is your living room. The promenade is your backyard. The café is where you run into your neighbors. And it feeds your soul!

And this whole worldschooling experience in Europe has me wondering if, in making our individual lives more comfortable, we’ve lost some of the community that happens when people simply live life together.

Would you move your family around the world for three months?? 👀

We did. Here’s what life in Spain actually looks like:
Walking everywhere. Beach afternoons. Tapas after school. Weekend adventures. New friends from all over the world. And plenty of kid meltdowns in places where we don’t speak the language. 😅

We’re spending three months in Spain with Boundless Life, actually living somewhere new instead of just visiting.
