After a lot of "it's closing", it's NOT closing", "yes it's closing", no it's NOT closing" back and forth, it's now definite that Wee Blew Inn, the iconic diner that's served Venice for 45 years, is definitely closing it's doors for good. They are in the process of emptying out the building, and a look at their page shows that they are preparing to start selling off items beginning today. It's always sad news when time takes another landmark and reduces it to a memory. Got a memory to share in the comments?

It’s Official: putting to bed the rumors, it’s now a confirmed transaction — Walmart has officially acquired land north of Laurel Road in Venice.

Details of the deal show that Wal-Mart Stores East LP purchased a 22-acre parcel for $20.8 million, according to property records. The site, part of the well-known Hurt Assemblage, and sits at 2001 Laurel Road, just north of the Laurel Nokomis School in the vicintiy of the Reserve at Venice apartments.

While rumors about a potential Walmart at this location have been circulating, the recent transaction confirms that the retail giant is now the official owner. A new parcel ID will be assigned in the 2026 tax roll, as the land is being carved from a larger annexed tract that became part of Venice back in 2007.

Walmart’s newly acquired land is also just west of a location where county commissioners recently rejected the construction of a proposed hotel, which further demonstrates the growing interest and changing landscape along this stretch of Laurel Road.

Venice, Florida, is set to host the renowned Mille Miglia auto race on Saturday, February 21, 2026, as part of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida—a thrilling four-day international road rally traversing the Sunshine State.

Organized by the City of Venice and the Venice AACA Car Club, this event continues a grand tradition, featuring a scenic route through Naples, Venice, and onward to Tampa. Enthusiasts can anticipate a dazzling parade of meticulously restored classics and exotic automotive icons, with hundreds of spectators lining the streets to witness these rolling works of art.

The rally commences with a public-facing leg through downtown Venice, where drivers and passengers will navigate checkpoint-based time trials in heritage vehicles before continuing their journey toward Tampa. This stop is part of a larger loop that begins in Naples and concludes in Miami on Monday, February 23.
