Silent Key: The Venice Voyager (W4AC-1)
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of a loss in our digital skies. Venice Voyager, tracking under the call sign W4AC-1, has been officially declared missing and presumed lost.
Our intrepid high-altitude explorer unfortunately never woke up with the sun on Tuesday. Team members and club trackers listened intently all day Tuesday and again through Wednesday morning, hoping to catch that familiar, reassuring blip of a signal. Regrettably, the airwaves remained silent.
A look at the weather radar tracks for the Tampa Bay area tells the likely story of its final moments. Overnight Tuesday, several major thunderstorm systems swept across the region from the southwest. It is assumed that the Voyager crossed paths with one of these powerful cells, and the severe weather ultimately brought the balloon down.
