Yesterday my wife and I visited a Nigerian couple ❤️We had good conversation, it was fun, educative, and full of culture.
One thing I noticed though some of the kids we met there found it difficult to speak their mother tongue. 🤔
Truth is raising children abroad comes with many silent battles.
School environment, peer pressure, accents, limited exposure, mixed cultures, even the desire to “fit in” all play a role.
Sometimes parents teach.
Sometimes they try.
Sometimes life just gets busy.
But one thing is clear: language is more than words it’s identity, history, and connection.
No blame. No judgment.
Just a reminder that culture must be intentional, especially in the diaspora.
Moral:
Culture doesn’t fade because children don’t want it. it fades when it isn’t intentionally passed on.
In the diaspora, language must be taught with patience, love, consistency.
