What Is Hiding Beneath This Mushroom?

A mushroom may look simple from above, but beneath its cap is a highly efficient reproductive surface. Thin gills radiate outward like tightly packed shelves, creating far more area than a flat underside could provide. These gills are lined with a microscopic layer called the hymenium, where club-shaped basidia form and release spores. In many species, a single mature mushroom can send millions of spores into the air in one day. Air currents carry them away, giving the fungus a chance to establish new growth elsewhere. The cap is only the visible cover. The real reproductive machinery is hidden underneath, built from folded tissue, microscopic cells, and a release system designed for maximum spread.
