[Portrait of Cowboy Nathaniel Youngblood] - The Portal to Texas History In celebration of February 2026 being 100 years of Black History Month, we recount the life of Nathaniel Youngblood (1922–1996) who was a WWII Navy veteran and prominent Black cowboy from the Texas Coastal Bend whose life and family history represent the enduring legacy of African American ranching culture in the state. 

Nathaniel Youngblood is celebrated as part of a generation of cowboys who maintained ranching skills passed down through families for decades. Historically, roughly one in four cowboys in Texas was Black, though their stories were frequently omitted from mainstream Western narratives. His participation in oral history projects helped preserve the record of this "lost" community for future generations.

He was a subject in Louise S. O’Connor’s book and photography project "Cryin' for Daylight: A Ranching Culture in the Texas Coastal Bend", which captures the specific community of Black cowboys in South Texas.

He was also featured in the documentary and photo exhibit "Workin' From Can't to Can't: African-American Cowboys in Texas", which documented the often-overlooked history of Black ranch hands who performed essential labor on Texas ranches.
