After The Dissing, What Next?
There’s nothing wrong with hip-hop competition. Artists can battle, defend their camp and prove who has the better pen. But when it turns into personal insults and disrespect, what happens after the hype dies down?
The ongoing back-and-forth between Princess H of Doz and Wisher Baby of Black Leo raises a bigger question: are they winning the battle while damaging relationships they may need tomorrow?
There are also claims that both artists are affiliated with their respective labels rather than formally signed under professional contracts. If that is the case, artists need to understand the difference between friendship, affiliation and an actual recording deal.
HIP-HOP DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN ABUSE
You can diss someone without crossing every line.
Attack the bars. Attack the music. Attack the flow. Attack the achievements.
Show why your pen is better without bringing unnecessary personal abuse into it.
THINK ABOUT TOMORROW
The person you disrespect today could be connected to a major collaboration, event, sponsorship or opportunity tomorrow.
You don’t have to be friends with everyone, but burning bridges for temporary social media attention can cost you later.
And for upcoming artists, before joining any label, understand the contract: Who owns the music? How are royalties shared? How long is the deal? What happens when it ends?
Don’t confuse being close to a label with having a professional contract.
BARE FACTS
Defend your camp if you must, but don’t destroy your future just to prove your loyalty today.
Win the battle with your pen, but leave room for tomorrow.
Do you think artists can defend their camps and have strong diss battles without unnecessary personal disrespect?
