Like many, I don’t believe RFK Jr. is the right person to represent our community…and I also think we need to talk about something important:
The realities he touched on are real, and they’re usually ignored.
Autism is being celebrated now more than ever and the resulting cultural shifts have helped so many. Acceptance and inclusion are vital.
AND…because two things can be true at once…autism (across the entire spectrum) still comes with very real challenges. The sort of challenges that still seem to live in the shadows, despite our best awareness efforts.
Profound autism often means 24/7 care, dangerous self-injury/physical aggression, unreliable communication, and deep fears about the future.
AND THE PART THAT NO ONE IS ACKNOWLEDGING: “low support needs” autism is not “easy autism”.
Many autistic people without intellectual disabilities still deal with unemployment, social isolation, communication challenges, executive dysfunction, and alarming su***de rates.
What we don’t need is more division in our autism community. Now more than ever, we need to come together.
What we do need is real solutions: services, housing, funding for therapy and support…and not just for children, but for autistic adults too.
We need a world that sees and supports the full spectrum of autistic reality, the beauty and the pain.
