“It was way smaller. There was not enough room for all the students to sit. But in here, we have way more space,” said Waco High junior Tyler Hansen.

When students enter the new Waco High School, they are greeted with a mural representing Waco High’s history: Richfield Rams, Waco High Tigers and Jefferson-Moore Lions.

For students familiar with the previous campus, the new facility feels nothing like the Waco High they knew.

Noe Guerrero, a Waco construction worker and father of three, was detained by ICE during a routine traffic stop last week for allegedly not carrying immigration documents.

His employers say the documents were in his work truck at the time and are now speaking out in his defense, calling Guerrero a dependable worker and devoted family man.

On Friday, protesters gathered outside the Waco federal courthouse, urging authorities to release him and reunite him with his family.

Former Alta Vista Elementary School students next month will step into new and renovated schools equipped with new gyms, cafeterias and the latest technology.

But some Alta Vista families are worried about what their children might lose as they are split between two schools.
