A little boy lay in the hospital, scared and sobbing. Doctors couldn’t calm him — until a nearby police officer gently asked, “Can I hold him?” The boy soon stopped crying, resting his head on the officer’s chest. With the weight of his gear, the officer sat on the bed and held him until he fell asleep. “It was just human instinct,” he said. “He needed someone.” It wasn’t about the badge — just compassion.
