6 Active Listening Essentials For Top Performers

According to a recent Forbes article, a whopping 64% of HR professionals revealed that “active listening” is considered an essential leadership skill, while 74% of employees stated they are more effective at their jobs when they feel heard.

So… leaders who prioritize active listening empower themselves to:

↳ build stronger connections
↳ resolve conflicts
↳ foster collaboration
↳ inspire others

During conversations, effective leaders practice active listening by:

1️⃣ Being Present

Being fully present in conversations shows respect and demonstrates that you value the speaker's input.

Leaders set aside distractions, maintain eye contact, and actively engage in the conversation.

2️⃣ Note-taking

Taking notes during discussions helps leaders capture essential information, key insights, and action items.

Not only does this reinforce listening, but it also enables leaders to follow up and prioritize action.

3️⃣ Showing Empathy

Exceptional leaders practice empathy, actively seeking to understand others' perspectives and experiences.

By listening empathetically, leaders can connect on a deeper level, build trust, and foster a supportive work environment.

After the conversation, effective leaders take these steps:

4️⃣ Reflection:

Leaders reflect on the information shared, the emotions expressed, and the underlying messages conveyed during the conversation.

This introspection allows leaders to gain deeper insights and adapt their approach accordingly.

5️⃣ Follow-up:

Leaders send follow-up communications that demonstrate active listening and reinforce understanding.

Expressing appreciation, summarizing key points discussed, and offering support showcases leaders' commitment to ongoing communication and collaboration.

6️⃣ Application:

Leaders actively apply the insights gained from active listening into their leadership approach.

They create opportunities to leverage newfound knowledge, collaborate with team members, and drive positive change within the organization.

➡️ Embrace active listening as a leadership tool to unlock new opportunities and excel in your career! 🌟

How one simple solution brought together 7 individuals in 7 locations into a beautiful new site!💫

Today’s case study video highlights our friends and partners at Draper DNA, a building products marketing agency that leverages their experience to the advantage of their clients.

What elite performers do differently when making critical decisions.

I’ve personally used this checklist for every career-defining decision I’ve made.

🎯 Making the right decisions goes beyond just considering the options.

It's about following a systematic process that ensures success.

Before making the decision, consider:

➡️ Research:
Gather as much information as possible about the options available to you.

Explore the potential risks, rewards, and long-term implications.

➡️ Timeline:
Evaluate the timeframe within which you need to make the decision.

Consider any external factors or deadlines that might impact your choices.

➡️ Analysis:
Weigh the pros and cons of each option objectively.

Evaluate them against your goals, values, and priorities to determine the best fit.

During the decision-making process, focus on:

➡️ Intuition:
Trust your gut instincts and listen to your intuition.

It often guides you towards the right path and can uncover possibilities you might have overlooked.

➡️ Collaboration:
Seek advice from trusted mentors, colleagues, or industry experts.

Engage in meaningful discussions to gain new perspectives and insights.

➡️ Decision Matrix:
Utilize a decision matrix to objectively assess each option based on predetermined criteria.

Assign scores or weights to different factors to facilitate a rational comparison.

After making the decision, don't forget:

➡️ Planning:
Create a clear action plan, outlining the steps required to implement your decision effectively.

Set realistic goals, timelines, and milestones to keep your progress on track.

➡️ Support:
Identify the resources, support systems, or networks that can help you during the ex*****on phase.

Surround yourself with individuals who can motivate and guide you.

➡️ Adaptability:
Remain open to adjusting your decision if necessary.
Embrace feedback and new information that may arise during the implementation process.

Let's make 2024 the year of informed decisions and professional success!

If you could go back 20 years, what life or business advice would you give yourself?

Reflecting on two plus decades of personal growth and business experiences, here’s what I’d tell my younger self—can you relate to any of these?

10) Problems are not like “wine”. They usually don’t improve over time.
Learn to deal with them as quickly as you can.

9) The people you’ll be tempted to impress don’t really care about you.
Don’t pay so much attention to what they think!

8) Eliminate negative people from your life.
They will steal your dreams and drag you down.

7) Accept the fact that some things you simply cannot control.
Deal with the stuff you can and learn to identify which one is which.

6) Follow your instinct and trust in yourself.
Keep moving forward and don't look back!

5) People don’t change, unless they really want to.
Don’t waste your time trying to change them. Just accept how they are.

4) You’re more capable than you think.
Both to achieve your dreams and to endure hard times.

3) Live according to your true values, and not by other people's expectations of you.

2) Enjoy the journey and be in the moment. “Now” will never happen again…

1) Share your life with a person that truly loves you, have common values and is your best friend. Everything else doesn’t really matter…

So, what would you tell your younger self? Share one of two things!

The Future of Video Production is Already Here. And it's not what you think!

I recently did an “ABOUT US” video project for a new client in Uruguay.

Important “detail”: I never left my Raleigh (NC) office.

So how did my team tackle the project?

1) It was shot 100% remotely and it took less than 30 minutes!

2) High definition video and audio recording of a 30 minute interview.

The result of our innovative “virtual studio” approach resulted in:

- 60% reduction in production costs

- 70% faster turnaround time from concept to final product

- 0% video + audio quality sacrifice

Without this virtual studio process, my client would never have this important prospecting video to grow his business!

How lenses —both of glass and flesh—play pivotal roles in shaping reality!

As we journey through life, we often forget that what we see is merely a fraction of the spectrum.

What we "observe", can at times be a true or distorted reflection of reality...

1. The Canvas of Perception:

Imagine your eyes, not as mere observers but as artists, painting your unique version of the world.

Unlike a camera, frozen in its technical precision, your vision is alive, breathing with the hues of emotions and personal history.

Each person's reality is a masterpiece painted on the canvas of their perceptions...

2. The Art of Perspective-Sharing:

Consider the possibility of seeing through someone else's eyes and stepping into their frame to view the world.

Beyond a mere exchange of sight, it’s an invitation to empathy and understanding.

Perhaps one of the secrets to unlocking the chains of our own biases?

3. Dissolving the Mist:

Adjusting our focus, much like the precision of a lens, can clarify the blurred lines of our interactions.

If we could embrace varied perspectives and clear the "fog", what would we see?

4. The Beauty of Dialogue:

When we tune into the frequencies of others' experiences, our conversational skills evolve.

And it starts by not just hearing, but truly listening—capturing the essence of each other.

Let's reflect for bit...

Lenses like eyes, capture light and transport them into a focal point.

But lenses, unlike our eyes, are not influenced by our fears, biases and traumas...

So, can we all challenge ourselves to

1) step outside the confines of our own viewpoints and so we can see and hear people without distortions and noises?

and

2) be equally courageous to look at our mirrors accepting who we are?

What would you like to add? Comment below.

How to Supercharge Your Video Testimonials 🎬

Want to create customer testimonial videos that truly resonate and stick in people's minds?

The secret lies in tapping into the age-old art of storytelling. 💫

Instead of just having customers rattle off a list of features they like about your product, guide them through crafting a compelling narrative using the 5 storytelling core elements:

1. The Protagonist

This is your customer, the hero of the story.

Set the scene by having them introduce themselves and their role/business.

2. The Antagonist

What was the conflict, pain point or challenge they were facing before using your product/service?

This is the "villain" of the story.

Example question: "What was the biggest headache you were dealing with in [their role] before finding our solution?"

3. The Conflict

Dive deeper into the specific struggles and frustrations caused by the antagonist.

Build tension! ASK:

"Can you describe a particular scenario or example that really highlighted this challenge for you?"

4. The Climax

This is where your product/service enters as the savior! Have them share the pivotal moment when they decided to give your offering a try. ASK:

"What finally made you decide to explore [your product] as a potential solution?"

5. The Resolution

The satisfying conclusion where the protagonist overcomes the antagonist thanks to the powers of your product. Have them detail the key benefits and positive impact. ASK:

"How has [your product] changed things for you? What does your life look like now after implementing our solution?"

By framing testimonials as hero's journey stories, you create emotional relevance that allows prospects to better visualize themselves in that narrative.

🚫 My Worst 3 Consulting Clients Ever! 😱

Ever met clients who make you question why you took that project in the first place?

Here are my top 3 - Can you can relate?

1) The "But Can We Also" Maestro

From the get-go, it was an orchestral movement of "but can we also" add this and that, and even a talking dog? (off course they don't want to pay for it - they're just asking...)

Not that's not what we originally agree to do for you!

And it is definitely not what you need!

2) The Revisionist Historian

This client believed our project was a time machine. We had the ability to go back in time!

Every week a new request to change what was already filmed because "I just had this great idea!" Our timeline (and sanity) took more hits than a piñata at a kid's party.

3) The 1/2 Way Happy Client

Yes, he was pretty happy with the final product, but... what he wanted was really something a bit more like that uber elaborate inspirational video he showed me in our first meeting that was completely out his budget!

And guess what these 3 clients had in common?

Their wallets and check books clamped shut faster than a scared clam at the mention of "additional costs".

Lesson learned:

1) Cheap clients are the worst clients. They're just a pain!

2) Some people will never appreciate favors (they probably don't deserve them either)!

3) Bad clients show the "red flags" are there from day 1. If you ignore them you'll regret it!

🎤 Can you relate? Share what your worst client was like!

Want to share knowledge and prospect effectively without looking desperate or salesy?

Create "HOW TO" videos!

They so effective because:

1) "how-to" a.k.a. “expertise” videos tap into the brain's natural reward system

2) Every new piece of information acts like a mini 'eureka' moment, releasing dopamine and making learning a pleasure, not a chore.

Here’s why:

🧠 Neuro-connections are made when we see actions performed, making "how-to" videos a fast track to skill acquisition.

👀 Visual learning is king, with 65% of people being visual learners, "how-to" videos capitalize on this, making complex tasks easier to understand.

🎓 Knowledge retention from videos is incredibly high—viewers retain 95% of a message when they watch it in a video compared to 10% when reading it in text.

Start using visual storytelling to grow your business with effective "how-to" / “expertise” videos!

Our gut feelings are deeply connected to our emotions and experiences, guiding us in ways data cannot.

3) Innovation:

Following your instinct can lead to unique, uncharted paths, fostering creativity and innovation.

While data and analysis have their place, there's an irreplaceable magic in trusting our gut.

It's not about dismissing logic but balancing it with the instinctive wisdom we all possess.

So, here's to embracing our instincts—may they lead us to unexpected victories and insights. 🌟

And most importantly: GO WOLF PACK!
