New year, new things! Side B Studios will be closing its doors, and I had an incredible year living one of my dreams. There isn't a thank-you big enough to capture how grateful I am for everyone who made my experience memorable. As a fun farewell, here are some superlatives!

Stay Loud - Most extreme emotions in the studio 🎭
Talon Co. - Biggest fun-havers
Behind the Grey - Most willing to try something new
Moral Code - Most songs stuck in my head
Brighter Days - Best hangs
Stargazer - Most inspiring musicians
Upbringing - Most feeling-provoking music
Give Up - Most true to themselves
Gods of Space - Biggest vibers
Eye on Attraction - Best organized
Tyler Cupelli - The realest
Into Sunday - Most determined
Sleepsculptor - Coolest aesthetic
Mature Musical Pictures - Most relatable lyrics
Silhouette Lies - Always homies

Special thanks to Reuther Productions and Logan Beaver for their support, the Godins for such a warm welcome into the studio, and the countless number of friends I've made during this journey.

Much love and sincerest thanks,
Eric Chesek

MORAL CODE // STUDIO STORIES

Track 4) Trustfall

The word "dichotomy" comes to mind when I think of Trustfall. It's a vocally-driven song with sweet melodies, but the classic Moral Code snarl is in there too. Kenny (bass/vocals) came prepared with not one, not two, but a THREE-part harmony. I was totally on board with that. Jaymen (guitar/vocals) swooped in at the end to fill out some textural vocal stuff that added some nice flavor to the mix.

Selecting the best vocal mics was a long-winded process. Jaymen's voice was easy since we got the mic/preamp combo right at the beginning. An AKG C414 through a Vintech X81 preamp sounded perfect right out of the gate. However, that combo brought out some nasty nasally stuff in Kenny's voice which I've had a problem with since day one. We previously used a transformerless SM57 on other albums, but I wanted a fuller sound for this album.
After a solid 45 minutes of trying different mics and preamps, we settled on a Neumann U87 through a UA 6176. I can't recall if I was hitting the compressor or not. That setup paired with a pencil taped over the capsule to subdue sibilance worked surprisingly well!

MORAL CODE // STUDIO STORIES

Track 3) Pressure

"I literally want chorus on every guitar."
- Jaymen Luther, Guitarist of Moral Code

Aaand that's exactly what we did! This song was the clear single. It was the catchiest, earwormiest song that I heard during our demo sessions.
There was a space left for guest vocals in the bridge section which was eventually filled by one of the fine gentlemen from SABELLA. Let me tell you, I've never seen Kenny (bassist/vocalist) so excited about a part in MY LIFE. I've spent 4 years recording with this guy and he never blew up like he did when he heard the guest vocal spot. I thought he was physically hurt at first because of the random convulsions and the periodic roars of elation.

Thankfully we have a well-isolated vocal booth because he surely would have ruined the take otherwise...

MORAL CODE // STUDIO STORIES

Track 2) Settle

I've had the pleasure of recording Moral Code many times before Stop the World. They have a habit of writing songs that make me think, "Oh yeah, this is the one to do something big for them."
I felt that way about nearly every song on this EP, but Settle had some extra special sauce when I first heard it. Something about the way the drums and guitars played off each other's accents made me want to move. Let's be honest, that bass line goes hard too. Simple but effective.

Our recording timeline was limited since some of the Moral Code members had a tour to attend. I was focused on getting the main components of each song recorded instead diving deeply into extra production. Those guys know I like playing with additional tracks during the mixing process anyway.

For this song in particular, I wanted to maintain forward momentum and give a sense of atmosphere that wasn't initially in the second verse. I heard a guitar lead in my head which I suppose was equivalent to experiencing a vision. It took no effort. The idea just happened, and I was the vehicle to make it real. Weird.

Anyway, the Moral Code guys are usually good at reeling me in when I get too crazy for their music. I kept that in mind while executing the leads. It had to be tasty and not too over-the-top to fit in with the other guitar leads we recorded throughout the song. The band and I must have been on the same page because they loved the ideas and didn't propose any compromises. There's no better feeling than a bunch of musicians agreeing on a part without an argument attached! πŸ˜…
You can hear those guitar parts right after the first verse.

Bonus story: During the drum recording for this song the drummer had a hard time keeping the verse pattern going with one foot. For whatever reason using the left kick pedal for the pattern worked perfectly to keep him in time. What you're hearing is "right left right" instead of "right right right." It seemed unusual in the moment, but it worked without question!
Sometimes the destination is more important than the journey.

Check out my first post about Broken Glass if you're curious about how that track came together. I'll be keeping up with these posts for the remaining songs on the EP, so feel free to drop questions in the comments if you have any.

Sleepsculptor

There's something about heavy sporadic music with two vocalists that wins me over every time. Sleepsculptor is no different.

Logan Beaver, Ben Pypiak, and Hunter Derr deserve a gigantic thanks for making our vocal tracking session so memorable. I'm looking forward to the full release!

It was great having Silhouette Lies rehearse here! This is the band that started it all for me. I recorded my first EP with them in 2012, and now they are returning for a very special occasion, She's The One: A Weekend For Doreen.

Stargazer Live session

It's no secret that I'm a huge Stargazer fan. I had the opportunity to do a live session with them and Reuther Productions over the weekend. I have to admit, it was hard not to jam out in the control room while they were tracking.

Sam Clepper shot some behind the scenes footage of the session. Check it out and stay tuned for more!
