Warren declares snow emergency
By Gena Johnson

Warren Mayor James Fouts has declared a snow emergency, which means that all vehicles must be off the street starting at 11 pm tonight, Jan. 25.

Vehicles not removed may be heavily fined or towed.

“This is the largest snowfall this year and with the size of Warren it will take some time,” said Fouts in a press release. “Please do not drive unless you absolutely have to! Get your vehicle off the street early rather than after the plows have come by.”

According to the mayor, the Department of Public Works will be plowing 365 miles of city streets. The city’s GPS trackers will be up and running by 11 p.m. when the plows start. Residents can monitor the path of city snowplows through the SnowPaths website at https://portal.snowpaths.com/public/983277/983282.

Plowing will commence in accordance with city garbage route pickups, and sanitation pickup will maintain its regular schedule, said Fouts.

The mayor also stated that plowing priority otherwise begins with the main roads such as Nine Mile Road, 11 Mile Road and 13 Mile Road, as well as Hoover and Ryan roads, followed by the “half mile” roads, school bus routes and neighborhood streets.

“Please help your neighbors with snow removal on sidewalks and driveways,” said the mayor. “Kindness goes a long way for the elderly and those with disabilities.”

Cooperation and community were emphasized by the mayor.

“If we all work together this will be a safe time period for all,” said Fouts.

In an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road this weekend, AAA will activate its “Tow to Go” program for the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

“Tow to Go” provides safe transportation for impaired drivers and their vehicles.

The program will be active from 6 p.m. Friday, May 27 through 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 31.

Michigan residents can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO for a safe ride. When called, a tow truck transports the would-be impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10 mile radius.

The service is free, yet AAA asks that it be treated as a backup plan. “Two to Go” should be used as a last resort, according to AAA.

May 14 is the day! Don't forget to leave a nonperishable food item on your front porch for "Stamp Out Hunger."
The hearing was adjourned after it was discovered that someone watching the hearing virtually had posted screenshots of the hearing to social media.

The volunteer-based Michigan Cares for Tourism, or MC4T, nonprofit has launched an auction for the Pure Michigan guitar, a handcrafted, one-of-a-kind instrument created by Wallace Detroit Guitars.

The proceeds from the auction will be donated to MC4T, a volunteer partnership of tourism professionals dedicated to restoring and preserving Michigan’s historic, cultural, and natural attractions.

The custom-made Pure Michigan guitar is made of reclaimed old-growth pine from the Packard assembly plant, originally cut from Michigan forests. The custom pickguard is handmade of aged copper and hand-etched with the Pure Michigan logo and scenes from around the state.

The guitar strap is handmade of reclaimed vinyl from 1960 Cadillac car seats, and the control k***s are handmade brass replicas of Detroit manhole covers. The guitar is a testament to the hard work and high quality of Michigan’s makers and innovators.

To bid on the guitar, visit www.bidding.com. The auction will close at noon on May 25, and the winner of the guitar will be announced later that day at the “Return to Summer” Pure Michigan event on Mackinac Island via Facebook Live. To watch of video of the making of the guitar, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDILRDIU3Y0.
