Thank you, The Vindicator, for publishing a thorough obituary on Oct. 31 of Youngstown-born journalist Sidney Alan “Sid” Davis (1927-2025).

I would like to add a point: Sid Davis’ death reminds us of the importance of public media. The public media station at Davis’ alma mater Ohio University (WOUB) recorded an informative three-part interview with Davis more than a decade ago.

I think the Supreme Court will rule against President Donald Trump’s imposition of tariffs. That said, it’s just remarkable that the vote will not be 9-0.

Trump is claiming sweeping powers to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, which was a revised version of the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917. The acronyms “I-EE-pah” and “TWEE-ah” flew around the courtroom like trapped sparrows.

Most people’s housekeepers are hired to perform duties such as mopping floors, dusting furniture, changing bed linens and vacuuming the carpeting, but Erika T. Gold’s family’s domestic worker’s primary duty was far more consequential.

“She let us in because we had no place to go. No one knew we were there, and we could have been killed every day,” said Gold, 93, of Cleveland.

Emergency medical service has been a contentious issue in the township for several years and fire department officials said Halloween shows just how bad the problem has become.

“It’s not a reflection on a particular company. This is an issue across the board — when you don’t have the staff, it’s difficult to provide the service,” Boardman fire Chief Mark Pitzer said. “Last year we paid a lot of overtime to staff the ambulance and that was unsustainable financially.”

The Mahoning Valley has a long history of residents who served in the military.

According to the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau’s Community Survey, nearly 10% of the population in Mahoning County and 9% of the population in Trumbull County are veterans. That is more than the state average, which is between 6% and 7%. Columbiana County has more than 10% of its population as veterans.
