The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) officially inaugurated the Paseban Valley Aviary and the Timor Deer Breeding Center in the Megamendung Landscape, Bogor Regency, West Java, as conservation facilities to support the preservation of biodiversity. The inauguration was conducted by the Directorate General of KSDAE as part of efforts to strengthen wildlife conservation through education, research, breeding, and rehabilitation.

The Aviary Valley was developed as an ex-situ conservation center for various species of Indonesian birds, while the Timor Deer Breeding Center serves as a facility for both conservation and environmental education for the community. Both facilities are expected to support the growth of wildlife populations and strengthen public awareness of the importance of preserving nature.

The inauguration was also marked by the release of two rehabilitated Javan hawks into their natural habitat in the Megamendung area. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to safeguarding the survival of Indonesia’s endemic wildlife and reinforcing the ecological function of the area, which serves as a vital corridor for biodiversity on the island of Java.

Riau Police Chief Inspector General Herry Heryawan reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating networks involved in the poaching and trafficking of protected wildlife by enforcing the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA). Through this approach, the police not only prosecute perpetrators with prison sentences but also trace, freeze, and seize assets suspected of being derived from the proceeds of wildlife trafficking. This measure is taken to serve as a deterrent and to cut off the source of profit that has long fueled the rampant poaching of protected wildlife.

The Riau Provincial Police view crimes against wildlife as serious criminal offenses that impact environmental conservation and ecosystem balance. Therefore, law enforcement will be conducted comprehensively, targeting not only field-level perpetrators but also the networks profiting from this illegal trade. The police are also urging the public to play an active role in reporting hunting and trade activities involving protected wildlife to prevent environmental damage and safeguard the sustainability of Indonesia’s biodiversity.

Efforts to save the Bornean rhinoceros have entered a crucial phase. The government, together with various conservation organizations, has agreed to expedite the relocation of Pari Mahulu, the only Bornean rhinoceros still surviving in the wild in Mahakam Ulu, East Kalimantan. This step is being taken to preserve the genetic material of a species now on the brink of extinction.

Currently, the Bornean rhinoceros population is known to consist of only two remaining female individuals. One, named Pahu, is at a conservation facility, while Pari Mahulu still lives in her natural habitat. Experts believe the rescue cannot be delayed because Pari Mahulu’s death in the wild could eliminate the last hope for breeding Indonesia’s rarest rhinoceros subspecies,

Various preparations have been made, ranging from the construction of a quarantine enclosure to plans to use a helicopter for the relocation process. Through these steps, conservationists hope that reproductive technology and genetic conservation can provide the Bornean rhino with a final chance to survive the threat of extinction.

The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a wild cat found in various Asian countries, including Indonesia. This small predator is known for its remarkable adaptability and can be found in a variety of habitats, ranging from natural forests to plantation areas. In several studies, leopard cats have been observed to survive in oil palm plantations by preying on rats and other small animals.

However, the presence of the Bengal cat in oil palm plantations does not mean that such habitats are more ideal than forests. Researchers interpret this situation as evidence of how wild animals are forced to adapt to environmental changes resulting from the loss of forest cover. As their natural habitats shrink, Bengal cats follow available food sources to ensure their survival.

Although known for their resilience, Kuwuk cats still face various threats such as habitat loss, conflict with humans, and the wildlife trade. Their story serves as a stark reminder that adaptability does not guarantee safety; rather, it is a struggle for survival amid the increasingly limited space for wildlife.

Behind its melodious song, the Schach’s shrike (Lanius schach) is actually a master predator nicknamed the ā€œbutcher bird.ā€ This nickname stems from its unique habit of hunting various small animals—such as grasshoppers, crickets, lizards, frogs, and even baby birds—then impaling its prey on thorns or sharp twigs before eating it.

This behavior is not without reason. The cendet uses thorns as tools to hold and tear apart its prey because it lacks claws as strong as those of an eagle or other predatory birds. In fact, the impaled prey is often stored as a food reserve when the bird struggles to find new prey.

Although known for its ferocity, the cendet is also one of the most popular songbirds due to its intelligence in mimicking the sounds of other birds. Unfortunately, excessive hunting and trade are beginning to threaten its wild population. Yet, the cendet’s presence is vital to the ecosystem as it helps control insect and small animal populations in the wild.

Exciting news comes from Tesso Nilo National Park. The Ministry of Forestry announced the birth of a female Sumatran elephant calf on Wednesday (June 10, 2026). The calf was born to a mother named Ria around 4:00 a.m. local time and was found in good health by a team of mahouts a few hours later.

A veterinary examination revealed that the calf is active, has no physical defects, and is nursing normally. This birth marks Ria’s fifth calf and adds to the success story of the Sumatran elephant conservation program in Tesso Nilo.

Amid various threats such as habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict, the birth of this baby elephant is both good news and a new hope for the survival of the critically endangered Sumatran elephant. The birth also serves as proof that conservation efforts in Tesso Nilo continue to yield positive results for the future of Indonesia’s endangered wildlife.
