Ward 8 has a very important election coming up on Tuesday. One of the candidates is Trayon White. I knew Trayon pretty well in the past.
My organization, R.O.O.T., was operating in Ward 8. We opened up a community center in Cedar Heights & helped prevent most violence in Cedar Heights—-for several years.
That’s when I first met Trayon.
He ran an organization names “HICKS”—(Helping Inner City Kids Survive).
We use to run into each other all the time. Trayon was completely dedicated in making his community (and Ward 8 ) a better place to live. Trayon was probably 20 years old at the time.
I personally believe that he admired and looked up to me back then; as well as how much I admired him as a young man. In fact, when I organized a campaign (to block a Congressional bill on the front steps of the District Building); Trayon asked me could he speak…..and I allowed him to do so (see attached— front page of The Washington Informer article).
When Trayon got to be City Council Member, he somewhat forgot who I was. I could barely recieve a return phone call from him.
In my opinion, Trayon will probably win on Tuesday. If he does, I hope he returns as the young man I knew——who ran “HICKS”! Not the City Councilmember he ultimately became.
I hope he remembers the people who truly work and try to solve the issues in the community; rather than some of those who’ve surrounded him for their own personal interest. Further, I hope he returns to being the humble young man I met several years ago (where money & lifestyle was never an issue)—only making Ward 8 a safer & a better place to live for it’s residence.
