We welcomed a girl that no one wanted due to a birthmark — 25 years later, a letter uncovered the truth about her background. I'm 75. My husband, Thomas, and I never had children, and through the years, we accepted that fact. In my younger days, I was diagnosed with infertility, and the treatments yielded no success. So for almost 30 years, it was just the two of us. We learned how to navigate life together. One day, while enjoying morning coffee with our neighbors, we overheard a woman who worked at the local orphanage discussing a five-year-old girl who had not found a family. She mentioned that the child had been left at birth, and no one wanted to adopt her because of a birthmark. The orphanage had been unable to place her in a home. Thomas and I acted without hesitation. We decided to adopt her. At that time, we were already in our fifties, and honestly, people looked at us oddly. Our age gave us pause, but deep down, we knew we couldn’t turn away. When we visited the orphanage to meet the girl, everything felt right. Her name was Lily. The moment she gazed at me, my heart raced. I felt an instant connection. We brought Lily home, and it became the best choice of our lives. She was a wonderful child, and 25 years later, she blossomed into a compassionate, intelligent woman. She enrolled in medical school and began her journey to become a doctor. Helping others had always been her dream. Thomas and I were immensely proud of her. She became our whole world. One morning, while sorting through the mail I had taken from the mailbox, I noticed an unusual envelope. It had no stamp and no return address. I opened it and pulled out a handwritten letter. Feeling both curious and anxious, I began to read. "Hello. I'm Lily's biological mother. I know this may seem unusual, but you need to know the truth about her. I can no longer remain silent — I've carried this information for over 20 years..." The blood froze in my veins. BY THE END OF THE FIRST PARAGRAPH, MY HANDS WERE SHAKING. ⬇️
