🌍 A Mathematical Model Once Predicted “Doomsday” for November 13, 2026 — But What Did It Really Mean?
A mysterious prediction from more than 60 years ago has resurfaced online: Friday, November 13, 2026, was once described as a mathematical “doomsday” for humanity.
The idea dates back to 1960, when Heinz von Foerster, Patricia Mora, and Lawrence Amiot published a paper in Science titled “Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026.”
📊 The researchers analyzed historical human-population growth and created a mathematical model based on the rapid increase observed at the time. When they extended that curve into the future, the model reached a theoretical singularity on November 13, 2026—a point where the calculated population would approach infinity.
⚠️ But this was never a prediction that Earth would explode or humanity would suddenly vanish.
Instead, the date represented the point at which the mathematical model itself would become unrealistic. An infinitely large human population is physically impossible, so the result was essentially a warning about what could happen if population growth continued indefinitely under the assumptions of the model.
🌱 Since 1960, however, global demographic trends have changed significantly. Population growth has slowed, meaning real-world data no longer follow the extreme trajectory assumed by the original model.
Interestingly, November 13 was also von Foerster’s birthday, adding an ironic touch to the paper’s dramatic title.
🔭 So, will the world actually end on November 13, 2026?
No credible scientific evidence suggests that it will.
The real lesson behind the famous “Doomsday” date is about the limits of mathematical models. A model can produce an extraordinary result when a trend is extrapolated indefinitely—but reality doesn't have to follow that mathematical curve.
