Hey 👋 Bass lovers,
Do you remember the first time you heard "Portrait of Tracy"????
I certainly do! 1979 in Hollywood when attending B.I.T.
I learned how to play the song from help of two of my classmates, Roger Fiets and the late Daniel Breismiser.
Back then, whenever I played it in front of anyone I would immediately get a reaction.
Today, I teach it to a few of my students..
In fragments.
In my humble opinion..it's one of the hardest songs to play.

I absolutely love teaching ♥️ the bass guitar.
It always amazes me when I meet a young person who is eager to try something new.
Many of us forget what is what like in middle school. Some children have a boatload of programs that their in and have little time to add learning something like how to play music.
Piper has only been a bassist for three weeks and she knows two songs, the chromatic scale, and understands the value of whole, half,quarter and eighth notes.
(Yes..I meant eight not quarter notes for the intro of "My Girl").
She is a rock star in my book 📖 ✨️ 😍

Happy Thursday Bass family,
Sharing this lesson from my archives...

Some bassist love the sound of playing chords on their instrument.
I first learned the process through this application.

The lesson was created by the legendary Howard Roberts at G.I.T/ B.I.T....1978

These patterns are created by changing the order ( inversions) of the chord tones. We understand that a 7th chord is Root, 3rd, 5th, and Seventh.

What happens when you change the order will give you both a " open" pattern or " closed " pattern: Root, 7th, and 3rd a octave higher OR Root, 3rd , 7th.

This example includes the 5th, but trying to include it makes the chord sound " muddy ".

Playing the Root, Seventh and , third in the higher register sounds awesome 👌
