Global Press Journal exists to create a more just and informed world by training and employing local women journalists to produce ethical, accurate news coverage from the world’s least-covered places. We are working to solve two of the most entrenched problems in journalism — its lack of diversity across geographies, race, class and gender; and the absence of ethical, revenue-generating business models that create healthy and sustainable news organizations.

In Zimbabwe, banks heavily rely on foreign currency for transactions, trade financing and maintaining reserves. Analysts predict that the US executive order will destabilize an already fragile banking system, leading to a liquidity crisis in which banks will struggle to meet withdrawal demands. Without adequate access to foreign currency, banks may have to dramatically tighten their lending belts, potentially strangling the very economic activity they’re meant to support.

Last week saw the swift dismantling of USAID - a move by the administration of US President Donald Trump that had immediate, irreversible impacts.

Food aid stopped, refugees were left stranded and access to HIV medication disappeared, all while a new outbreak of Ebola threatened to tear through Uganda. Babies in Nepal, doctors said, are almost sure to starve. TB is likely to reemerge.

Global Press reporters live and work in countries where the effects of the USAID shutdown are acutely felt. They talked with people who were immediately affected, and with experts who fear that countless people are going to die.

Tiaré Girón’s three children all died from a rare genetic disorder that doctors could not diagnose. Instead of retreating into grief, she founded Un Bolillo para todos, a nonprofit that now supports thousands of families struggling with their children’s rare illnesses.

Girón’s organization provides medicine, emotional support and personal essentials often overlooked by hospitals. Her work is a promise to her late children and a lifeline for others facing the same challenges.

LGBTQ+ people in Uganda are facing rising evictions and threats after the anti-homosexuality law passed last year. Many have lost homes and livelihoods, forcing some to live in hiding. A network of shelters is working to provide safety in this difficult time.

The Uganda Minority Shelters Consortium and its partners have supported hundreds of people across the country. To keep residents safe, they are adapting quietly. Shelters move to smaller houses, change how they operate, and avoid drawing attention.

John Grace, who leads the consortium, understands the urgency. After being cut off by his own family, he now focuses on creating safe spaces where others can rebuild their lives.

In the Centla wetlands of Mexico, rising water levels and climate change are testing a way of life that has existed for generations. Residents are adapting by rebuilding homes on stilts, growing food above water and restoring mangroves that sustain the ecosystem.

Their efforts show how communities can fight to preserve both their traditions and the environment.
