Every sin leaves a mark. But it doesn’t have to stay.

The Prophet ﷺ said that when a servant commits a sin, a black spot is placed upon their heart. If they stop, seek Allah’s forgiveness and sincerely repent, their heart is polished again.
But if they return to the sin, the darkness increases until it covers the heart.

Allah says:
“No! Rather, what they used to earn has covered their hearts.”
— Qur’an 83:14

The scary part isn’t simply falling into a sin. We all fall short.
It’s allowing a sin to become so normal that eventually your heart stops reacting to what once bothered it.

But the beautiful part of the hadith is often forgotten:
You can come back.

Stop. Seek forgiveness. Make tawbah. Allah can polish the heart again.
— Jāmiʿ al-Tirmidhī 3334, graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ condemned the partisan mentality behind this. When a dispute sparked competing calls to the Muhājirūn and Anṣār, he said: “Leave it (that call) as it is a detestable thing.” -Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4905
