Broadcaster Creativity on Display for COVID-19 Coverage

The flexibility on display by the nation's broadcasters during the COVID-19 outbreak has been nothing short of extraordinary. Broadcast engineers and technologists are "MacGyver'ing" solutions to ensure that the public is protected, informed, and in this environment of social distancing, comforted.

The newscast must go on … but from a different place. I wish I knew the number of basements, closets and living rooms that have been converted to production studios these past few weeks. As orders were issued for folks to work-from-home, broadcasters opened their apartments and houses to viewers a...

The broadcast engineering community suffered a terrible loss last week with the untimely passing of John Lyons, a NYC legend responsible for the design and construction of two of NYC’s principal broadcast facilities (4 Times Square and One World Trade Center). PILOT and NAB knew John well, a frequent presenter at NAB conferences and a trusted resource who was always willing to lend his expertise.

In 2017, NAB bestowed upon John its highest technical honor, the TV Engineering Achievement award. In his acceptance speech at the 2017 NAB Show he said he’d “always tried to pay it forward, not only helping younger aspiring engineers, but also giving back to our industry, to education and to charitable causes,” ending with an appeal to mentor young broadcasters:

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from my peers and thank all of you for sharing your experiences with me for these many years. And never forget to take the opportunity to pay-it-forward to any young persons who express an interest in our great telecommunications industry.”

We offer our heartfelt condolences to John’s family and hope they are consoled by the fact that John lived his life to the fullest and was as good a person and friend as one is likely to encounter. We will miss him greatly.
