Gwiza Journey

Gwiza Journey This is foundational Yoga for the busy professional; a space for people of color to feel safe, be seen and heard. My name is Jalila Williams.

Cultivate a basic understanding of physical, mental and emotional balance. I am the voice and the creator behind Gwiza Journey. I am a 200 hour registered Hatha Yoga teacher, creative storyteller, avid traveler, and culture enthusiast. I also love to sing and play guitar. Born in Nairobi, Kenya and raised in Temple Hills, Maryland, I share Rwandan ancestry through my maternal family. Gwiza (gwee-z

ah) honors part of my mother’s name and it means abundant. Gwiza Journey is a lifestyle brand that shares transparency in learning how to balance the practical demands of life with the pursuit of passion. I am essentially showing how I can create a life I desire by investing in the things I love while earning a sustainable means of living. I began practicing Yoga in 2018 and obtained my 200 hour certification in 2020 before the pandemic. In 2024, I earned my certification in Sound Healing. Yoga helps reroute me to a sacred internal dialogue. It builds greater self-awareness and preserves mental clarity. It is an honor to pay my knowledge forward in spaces that promote access to wellness in communities where it isn’t otherwise provided. My deep love for travel began when I took a year sabbatical from college at the age of 19 to live in Rwanda. I have since set out to see the world for myself, visiting over 20 countries and working as an English teacher in Thailand. I enjoy adventure and culturally immersive travel. My experiences tend to fall off the beaten path so each place tells a unique story. My mission with Gwiza Journey is to share my perspective of how I see the world and myself in it. I intend to advocate for Black women in wellness and connect in Black creative spaces by finding my tribe and showcasing my talents. I want to also highlight the importance of community building with other creators and small businesses. Follow me on this abundant journey!

I’m sure you’ve heard of Côte d’Ivoire (the Ivory Coast) 🇨🇮 but it might not have been on your radar to visit. So I’ll share some of its light. I tried to create a reel recapping this entire experience but I felt like I was cheating the magical moments captured.

Côte d’Ivoire does not have a heavy tourism scene and that is what I love most about it. It is true to its nature so if you’re used to modern comforts and convenience that appeal to the touristic palate, this might not be the place for you. The nativity is strong here; aside from Lebanese and Chinese expats, everyone is BLACK. Beautifully BLACK. The momentum of life is ever flowing; the village is nowhere near lost. It is not a perfect place as it has its own flawed economic ecosystem. Nonetheless, I felt the heartbeat of this land through smiles from the people, laughter from the children, beating of the drums, smells of smoked meat, and sweetness of fresh fruit. I haven’t felt so much at home being so far away in a long time.

First trip back to Africa since 2011 and this was a perfect welcoming. Looking forward to returning very soon🧡🤍💚🌍

How do we learn to keep steady when life throws us off our game?

Keep your focus on the goal. In this pose that my drishti (gaze) is on one point. It stays there. That is what helps me steady my mind and keep my balance while dancing with gravity.

Think of this as a metaphor for life, off of the mat. It’s normal to lose balance or focus. Over time though, you’ll learn how to steady the mind and regain concentration on what’s most important. It’s all a resistance of gravity ✨

Comment “BALANCE” if you want to learn more on how to improve your concentration.
