Minneapolis, MN - With threat of eviction hanging overhead, today residents of the Sanctuary in Powderhorn Park are sharing their experiences being repeatedly displaced and evicted by police.

Established on June 10, the first Sanctuary Park tent encampment sprang into existence to serve the shelter needs of unhoused Minneapolis residents during the coronavirus pandemic. After the Hiawatha Encampment was evicted, the Sanctuary Hotel was next to follow, formerly located eight blocks north of George Floyd square.

Two weeks ago, on Monday, July 20, dozens of unhoused people were displaced and about 20 people were arrested as law enforcement executed an eviction of the eastern portion of the sanctuary park.

"This is a cycle of violent evictions," asserts a post on the @MplsSanctuary Instagram page. Tent encampments have existed for years in Minneapolis, a city with a significant Indigenous population, which is reflected in the demographics of the unhoused. Two years ago Unicorn Riot walked through the Franklin/Hiawatha encampment, the "wall of forgotten natives," a tent city of houseless folks, mostly of Native American heritage.

Denver.

On July 29, 2020, CO State Troopers, Denver Police, Park Rangers, and other city departments and contracted companies, forced unhoused residents to move from Lincoln Park in downtown. The tent community was living in the park, which is right across from the CO State Capitol building, for about four months.

The prior morning, police showed up at the park with a bus asking residents if they wanted a ride to the auxiliary shelters, even though they close this week. This visit made folks suspicious, but was not a formal notice to move.

Then in the evening, police came back to give verbal warnings to some of the tent residents that they would have to pack up and move by 10:30am the next day.

Per class-action lawsuit agreements, the city is legally supposed to provide a 7-day posted notice for large encampments, but because the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment deemed it a "public and environmental health risk," the city bypassed the legal agreements.

The sweep began at 6am on Wednesday, and as residents were being told to pack-up and move, a fence was being constructed around the perimeter.

Some residents were unable to retrieve their belongings because they didn't know the sweep was happening.

The state troopers and police assaulted multiple people, including two sexual assaults by Denver police, one on a minor, and one on our local reporter.

We will be providing further reporting on this event, so stay tuned.

Women Hold Up Half The Sky

"I am a 49-year-old mother with a Masters in Education and I just got gassed by my own government. We were peaceful. I think I stood in the middle of the gas for longer than I should have because I just couldn’t comprehend that the smoke in the air and those canisters rolling on the ground toward my feet were tear gas. My government wouldn’t take away my right to protest. My government would NOT attack a group of moms…I was wrong."

“The black people I come from were owned by the white people I come from. The white people I come from fought and died for their Lost Cause. And I ask you now, who dares to tell me to celebrate them? Who dares to ask me to accept their mounted pedestals?”
