The call sounded ordinary—just another line item in a long shift. But by the time Officer Michael Reyes reached the end of that forgotten street, something in the air felt wrong… like the city itself was holding its breath.
A sharp autumn wind funneled through the block, scraping brittle yellow leaves across broken pavement and rattling loose windowpanes in buildings that had long since given up hope. This part of the city didn’t make the news. It didn’t get cleaned up. It simply endured.

The sling.
It was made from an old blue T-shirt, knotted clumsily but securely across her small frame. And inside it…
A baby.
Tiny. Motionless except for the faint rise and fall of his chest. His head rested beneath her chin as if that was the only place in the world he belonged. His skin looked pale against the cold air, his lips dry and cracked. Even in sleep, he looked exhausted—as if life had already taken too much from him.
Michael’s breath caught.
